John B. Fay, Jr. Obituary

John B. Fay, Jr., 98, of Virginia Beach, passed away March 5, 2021. He was born in Portsmouth, VA to the late John B. Fay, Esq. and Linnette Grubbs Fay. John returned to his early career as a chemist at the Norfolk Navy Yard after serving in the Army Air Corps as a pilot during WWII. As a pilot, John was nicknamed, “Jack,” a name that stayed with him throughout his life. In the mid-60s, he started a business drilling water wells for household and garden use. Successful in this field, Jack loved his work and often shared fond memories from that time. His wife, Louise, helped him with his business. In the 70s, Jack joined the Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, serving his community for over 25 years. He also served as its President for several years. Jack was one of the first volunteers trained as a cardiac technician in the city and very proud of a new nickname he earned, “Bring ‘em Back Jack,” from saving the lives of many who had suffered a heart attack. Louise joined the Ladies Auxiliary for the Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad during this time as well. Jack and Louise started ballroom dancing in the 70s and it became their true life’s passion. For 20 years, they were stars on the dance floor and made many great friends at the various weekly dances they attended. After Louise’s death, Jack was fortunate to find a new dance and late life partner, Zuki Burns, who had been a close friend in their dancing community. Together, they shared their passion for dancing for 10 years. Jack continued dancing until he was 94. Jack was predeceased by his parents and sister, Dwen Fay, and his wife of 50 years, Louise Wear Fay. He is survived by his four children: Linda Fay Mullen, John B. Fay III (Tricia), Patti Fay Schmitt (Charles), and Julia Fay George (Bill); six grandchildren: Shannon, Jennifer, John V, Dawn-Michelle, Suzanne, and Allison; and six great-grandchildren: Ellie, Charlie, Colin, Levi, Magnolia, and Grant. The family extends their thanks to the staff at Kings Grant House, an assisted living facility in Virginia Beach, for the care they provided to Jack during his last three years. A private service will be held at a later date. Contributions in Jack’s honor can be made to the Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel assisted the family.
