Dorothy Ann Manley, 81, of Basco, passed away at her home at 5:00 AM early Sunday morning, March 28, 2021.

Dorothy was born May 24, 1939, the daughter of Charles Viney and Evvie Leona (Peters) Gavillet on the farm north of Basco.  She attended the one-room Apple Grove schoolhouse north of Basco and graduated from Warsaw High School in 1957.  She then graduated from the Gale Institute in Minnesota.  Dorothy met her future husband, John Louis Manley, at a dance in Basco.  On December 28, 1957 they were married at the Basco Methodist Church.  Dorothy and John enjoyed dancing and traveling.  The highlight of Dorothy’s travels was going to Paris and seeing the Eiffel Tower.  Dorothy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother with a good supply of hugs for all.  Dorothy worked 25 years for the Continental, Contel and later GTE telephone companies.  She was the first woman to work on the electrical-mechanical equipment in the telephone offices in Hancock County.  She was active in the Basco Activities Club, treasurer of Basco Methodist Church, Basco Village Clerk, Basco Village trustee and election board.  Dorothy had many interests such as crocheting, quilting, ancestry, pinochle and collecting and enhancing old family pictures to share.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, John, of Basco; children, Robert J. (Linda) Manley, Mary L. (Steven) Shipman and Lois M. (Dan) Kissinger, all of Basco; grandchildren, Robert L. (Jen) Manley, Heather Manley, Stephanie (Heather) Roberts-Wrenn, John Eshom, Vince Kissinger, Andria (Ian) Miller and Kayla (Shaun O’Tool) Lester; many great grandchildren; siblings, Charles R. (Marietta) Gavillet of Carthage, Margaret “Maggie” Huls of Basco, Linda (Bud) Wear of Carthage and Susan (Larry) Hutchison of Carthage; and her best and oldest friend, Patricia Jacquot Orr.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, April 2, 2021, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with burial to follow in the South Cemetery near Basco.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 PM Thursday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.  Memorials may be directed to Blessing Hospice.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
