Obituary

On March 27, 2021, Carl Wesley (Pete) Peters died in Charlottesville, VA.  He was 96 years old.

Mr. Peters is survived by his wife of 67 years, Adalene Peters of Fluvanna County; his children, Steve Peters of Palmyra, VA and Karen Fritsch of Durham, NC; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild, Wesley Scott.

Mr. Peters was born on January 8, 1925 in Santa Ana, California to the late Grada Cheatam Peters and the late Marie Dodd Peters.   He began flying lessons at a local airfield at the age of 14, riding his bike to get there.  Mr. Peters received his high school diploma early in order to enlist in the US Marine Corps at the age of 18, where he became a plane technician.  He served honorably in both WWII and the Korean War, received six Medals of Good Conduct and retired a Master Sergeant after 20 years spanning active duty and 10 years in the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve.

Pete met his wife, Adalene (nee Kube), at a dance in Virginia in October of 1952.  They married on Christmas Day of the same year.  Pete’s Marine Corps service took them to North Carolina and California though they primarily raised their children in Charlottesville and Orange, VA.

Following his retirement from the Marine Corps and civilian duty, Pete and Adalene settled in Fredricksburg, VA and have lived for the past 35 years in Fluvanna County within walking distance of much of their extended family.

Pete enjoyed an idiosyncratic retirement.  He was likely the rare air wing squadron vet who read the complete works of William Shakespeare along with biographies, histories, and the latest John Grisham novels.  A man of few words, he took up oil painting and his canvases depict rural and cowboy life including a horse in a bathroom.  He loved a good sweet treat, music from the 30’s and 40’s, and his photo albums from post war Shanghai which reveal an eye for photography.  When AOL became available on their rural route in Palmyra, Pete logged on to the internet and kept up with old friends via email.  He shopped for supplies to construct his remote control airplanes though he did prefer to call vendors as opposed to using his credit card online.  Pete was a doting grandfather and he loved spending time with his grands and great-grands.  The youngest, a great-great grandchild, is his namesake, Wesley.

Pete and Adalene were longtime members of Cunningham United Methodist Church.  A private memorial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice House in Charlottesville, VA.
