Gilbert Van Beek, 94, Holland, MI, formerly of Strasburg, ND, passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at Hospice of Holland in Holland. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Hope Reformed Church, Westfield, ND. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 8p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, ND. Gilbert Van Beek was born July 7, 1919 on the Van Beek family farm west and north of Westfield ND. Gilbert was one of 9 boys and 2 girls, the son of Bert and Hannah (Vander Vorst). Gilbert attended the Union rural school. He married Alberta Vander Wal on October 15, 1940. Gilbert farmed several years in the Westfield area. He broke from being a full time farmer to part-time when he attended a year of college at Northwestern in Orange City, IA and from there he attended RBC in Grand Rapids, MI. Gilbert completed his studies at RBC in 1965. He pastored churches in Bottrel and Calgary, AB, Canada as well as Herried, SD and Strasburg, ND. Gilbert and Alberta celebrated 67 years of wedded life together before her death in November 2007. They lived a full life together and in later years did a lot of traveling going to see children & grandchildren. After Alberta's death Gilbert spent winters with his daughters spending time in BC, MI, KY, and FL. Gilbert passed away at Holland Hospice House in Holland, MI on April 25, 2014. Gilbert would have celebrated his 95th birthday on July 7. Those he leaves behind are his four children: one son Arnold and (Sylvia) Van Beek from Grand Haven, MI, daughters Ilean and (Lee) Hollaar from Aldergrove, BC, Connie & (Cal) Van Van Den Elst from Zeeland, MI and Jacqueline and (Mike) Langley from Scotland. Ten grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He leaves one brother, Roy of Miami, FL and two sisters, Ruth (Maier) and Diane Van Beek both of Lynden, WA, three sisters-in-law Esther Van Beek of Huron, MI, Lorraine Van Beek of CA and Donna Van Beek of Bellingham, WA. Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife Alberta, one infant son, Tim, seven brothers, Gerrit, Bill, Laurence, Alvin, Floyd, Clarence, and Glen.
