LeRoy M. Schanz, age 90 of Homer passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 Henry Ford Allegiance Care Link in Jackson surrounded by his family. He was born December 25, 1926 a son of George and Kathaleen (Kelly) Schanz in Ypsilanti. On September 5, 1953 he married Donna Nowlin in Angola, IN. She preceded him in death October 22, 2015. He graduated from Ypsilanti High School with the Class of 1944. Roy proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a machinist mate. He worked for 46 years at Calhoun Foundry in Homer, retiring in 1989. Roy enjoyed airplanes, word search, building and flying RC airplanes, classic wooden boats, woodworking, bowling, flying and going to boat and air shows, particularly World War II airplanes, his favorite being the P 51 Mustang. He was a member of the Homer VFW, Battle Creek RC Club and EAA. Surviving Roy are his sons Bruce Schanz and John Schanz, both of Jackson, grandchildren, Kurtis (Abbey) Schanz of Jackson, Nicole Schanz of Jackson, great-grandchildren, Chesney and Ryder Schanz . He was preceded in death by his father, George, mother, Kathaleen, step mother, Grace Schanz, and his wife Donna Schanz. According to his wishes cremation has taken place and a private graveside service was held at Fairview Cemetery in Homer.
