Joyce Ann Brown Obituary

On March 21, 2021, Joyce A. Brown, of Centerville, Maryland and formerly of Timonium, passed away, cherished daughter of the late Joe and Emily (Wachter) Brown, loving sister of Joe Brown and his wife Judy and the late Stephen Brown, dear aunt of Michael and Cindy Brown, and great aunt to Madeleine LaFollette. She grew up in Catonsville and graduated from Catonsville High School in 1964 where she played Varsity volleyball. After graduating Towson State Teacher’s College, Joyce became a lifelong educator who specialized in reading and believed that books were some of our greatest gifts. She was a Baltimore County School Teacher for 30 years and provided private tutoring to students for many years, even into retirement. She loved learning and helping other people learn. During her teaching career, she coached Odyssey of the Mind, a worldwide creative problem-solving competition, and took two groups to national competitions. Joyce was passionate about education and held Master’s degrees from both Towson University and Johns Hopkins University. She continued her own education during retirement through the Institute of Adult Learning Center at Chesapeake College, where she indulged her interests and enjoyed courses on topics such as the First Ladies and Harry Potter. She enjoyed the theater and the arts and was a member of the BMA and a season pass holder at Center Stage in Baltimore for over 20 years. She took in a host of plays monthly with two good friends. In her younger years, she volunteered at the Baltimore Aquarium, traveled extensively, and was an avid tennis player. She enjoyed knitting and crochet and was an enthusiastic player of Mahjong and Scrabble. Aunt Joyce loved hearing from her nephew, Michael, in West Virginia and talking on the phone to him and his girlfriend, Becky. She was always interested in hearing about details of Michael’s work with his car wash business. She also enjoyed late night calls from Becky to hear of new sewing projects that reminded her of her mother Emily. She was encouraging when her niece, Cindy, pursued and obtained her Master’s degree from Towson University, and was thrilled when Cindy and her husband, Andrew, had their daughter, Madeleine, in March of 2020. She enjoyed calls from Cindy to talk about Madeleine and all that the future would have in store for her. Friends may call at Slack Funeral Home, P.A., 3871 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, Maryland 21043 on Friday March 26, 2021 from 10:30-11:30 am followed by a short service.
