Eleanora P. Kastanowski

KASTANOWSKI, Eleanora Adeline Palmer/Palmeri (94), of Springfield, VA, died 12/11/2015 following a brief illness. She was born on February 21, 1921 in New Castle, PA to Mary (Sorbo) and John Palmer/Palmeri. She attended schools in New Castle, PA, Buffalo, NY, and Cleveland, OH, and was a 1938 graduate of New Castle High School. She also attended New Castle Business College, New Castle, PA and Central Bible College, Springfield, MO. On 20 August 1948 she married 2nd Lt. John A. Kastanowski, then stationed at Ft. Meade, MD and accompanied her husband to a number of Army posts within the United States. She worked as a civil servant in a number of government and military organizations and retired in 1981 after more than 22 years of federal service. Upon retirement she was awarded the Dept. of Army Commander's Civilian Service Medal. She attended the Springfield Covenant Church and was a member of the Women's Bible study group. She is survived by her daughter Mary E. Bender, Newmarket, NH, son John A. Kastanowski Jr., Centreville, VA, sister-in-law Frances G. Hickey, Portland, ME, daughter-in-law Maribeth R. Kastanowski, son-in-law Eldon M. Bender, grandchildren Celina Downs, Evan Bender, Amy Kastanowski, Michael Kastanowski and three great grandchildren. The family will meet relatives and friends for visitation at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, Alexandria, VA on January 16, 2016 between the hours of 2 pm and 4 pm. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, February 22, 2016 at 11am.
