Ruth Elizabeth Lammert passed peacefully April 16, 2016 in Island City (LaGrande), surrounded by family and friends. Ruth was born to James and Lulu Belle Read Feb. 21, 1922 on the family farm in Lostine. She was the youngest of eight children -- Robert, Margaret, Jack, Clyde, Carmen, Lou and Florence. Ruth graduated from Lostine High School in 1940, received her teaching certificate from Eastern Oregon College in 1943 and spent summers earning her bachelor's and master's degrees in education. She taught school in Stanfield, The Dalles, Imbler and moved to Portland in 1955 to teach at Capitol Hill for 19 years, and Marquam Middle School for four years until her retirement in 1979. In 1971, she married Sigmund Lammert. As Ruth would say, "We had 18 wonderful years together" before he passed away Sept. 2, 1989. She is survived by sons Dave Lammert (Kay Plumb) and Jeff Volkman, eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, ever-so-many nieces, nephews and her very dear friend of many years, Delbert Makin. Ruth led and loved her family, was mentor and friend to each, and is cherished by all. Thankfully, she left a very clear and wonderful footprint. One of her favorite things was an annual family reunion. In her honor, the family will gather July 9 at 10201 S Valley Ave., Island City. Per her wishes, half her cremains will be buried alongside her parents Sunday, July 10, 11 a.m., in Lostine Cemetery; the other half with her husband, Sigmund, in Portland, Aug. 27, 2016, 11 a.m., at Finley-Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
