Brian Cairns Obituary

Brian Arthur Cairns (Silver), of Moose Jaw, SK, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on March 12, 2021, at the age of 66. Brian was born in Coronach, SK on April 17, 1954 to Margaret and Arthur Cairns. He attended school in Coronach, and participated in many sports, including hockey, basketball, volleyball and track and field. He was extremely competitive, even into his later years, when he would still race against his siblings or his daughter. He grew up and worked on the family farm, as well as drove the school bus until he graduated from high school. He made many memories in his childhood/teen years with his siblings, and friends in all of their antics. After a year of working, at the age of 19, Brian enrolled in the Cadet Training Program with the R.C.M.P., graduating in the Spring of 1974. He went on to serve 3 communities in the R.C.M.P. for 9 years and made lifelong friendships. During that time, while posted in Humboldt, SK, he met his future wife, Colleen Albers, where they were married on June 26, 1976 in an R.C.M.P. ceremony at St. Augustine’s Church. On April 3, 1979, they welcomed their daughter Heather. After retiring from the R.C.M.P. Brian, Colleen and Heather moved to a farm south of Willow Bunch, SK. Brian farmed and worked at the R.M., while they built their house. On March 5, 1983, they welcomed their son, Jarad. Brian made sure that both of his children were involved in the farming operations both in the fields and the corrals. He taught them the safe way of doing things, by showing them what not to do. Brian started at the Poplar River Coal Mine in 1983, where he spent the next 29 years, first as an equipment and dragline operator, then a supervisor, ending his career in 2012 as the Mine Manager. His co-workers enjoyed his lunches, and many antics and laughs both with Brian and at his expense, such as when he opened his lunch box only to find a snake, rather than his desserts. Brian took it all with a laugh, but step back and watch out if you tried to scare him! Brian also served on the Willow Bunch Golf Club Board, where he was instrumental at renegotiating the golf course’s debt and positioning it as the highly successful business it is today. He also enjoyed many rounds on the course. Brian and Colleen, along with their son Jarad also ran Cairns Ag Supply supplying farmers in surrounding communities with agricultural parts. In 2002, Brian and Colleen sold the family farm and moved into Willow Bunch, where they lived until the beginning of 2008 when they moved to Moose Jaw, SK. In retirement, Brian spent his time building houses, doing renovations, driving truck, helping out friends and enjoying beverages with his family and neighbours. His favorite place in retirement was at the family cabin doing many upgrades and pulling his grandchildren around on the tube and wakeboard. He enjoyed camping, golfing, and watching sports, most notably those that his grandchildren were involved in. Brian loved telling (long) stories and was up for a visit anytime. Brian will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Colleen, children Heather Willman (Ryan), Jarad Cairns, grandchildren Wes, Reed and Sara Willman, sister Brenda Beattie (Rick), brothers Virgil Cairns (Lisa) and Rick Cairns, parents Margaret and Arthur Cairns, numerous aunts and uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. He is predeceased by his father and mother-in-law, Alois and Hilda Albers, his nephew Curtis Beattie, his sister-in-law Dettie Paydli, and brother-in-laws, Ben Albers, Rodger Albers and Murray Albers. Memorial donations may be made to the Saskatchewan Cancer Society at https://cancerfoundationsask.ca/. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all of the palliative care nurses and doctors in Moose Jaw and to the nurses in Unit 3B at the Regina Pasqua Hospital. They also send their heartfelt thanks for all of the visits, calls, messages, flowers and meals. A private funeral service will be held at Jones-Parkview Funeral Home in Moose Jaw on Friday, March 19 at 2:00pm with Della Ferguson officiating.
