Stephen Douglas McAree Annapolis, Maryland Obituary

Stephen Douglas McAree

McAREE, Stephen Douglas. Stephen was born in Northampton MA on April 16, 1961 and died in Arnold MD, on March 13, 2021, after his valiant battle with metastatic melanoma. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Stephen was the devoted husband to his wife Amalia, loving father to his children Ryan, Lauren, and Christen, stepchildren Cameron and Zoe, and adoring grandfather to his two grandchildren Joseph and Arallyn. Stephen was predeceased by his father, Walter Richard McAree, and he is survived by his mother, Janet, and siblings Karen, Kim, Richard, Peter, Robert, and John. Stephen was a fearless, multitalented, kind, and selfless man with a unique sense of humor that could sometimes get him in trouble. He devoted his life to his family and pushed aside his own needs and aspirations. Throughout his life, he loved being outdoors, from exploring as a child at Ellis pond in Norwood to boating, hiking, and camping with his friends and family. Stephen graduated from Norwood High School and completed his BS in Civil Engineering from Tufts University in 1983. Soon thereafter, he left behind the Massachusetts cold and drove with a group of friends to California in search of warm weather and better work opportunities. With stops along the way, he had a great adventure moving across the country with them. Per a current coworker, “Stephen was such a talent in what he brought to his work and the effort he was always willing to put into his projects”. With his natural talents and ability to add to his knowledge, he brought life to all the homes he moved into. From plumbing, electrical, tile installation, furniture building, outdoor landscaping, pond construction, and more, there was nothing he was not able to fix or create. After his 2004 melanoma diagnosis, he started leaving 10% of his home projects undone with the hope that he would cheat death until they were completed. Stephen will always be loved and sorely missed. The family will have a private celebration of life at a later date. They ask in lieu of flowers that donations may be made to Hopkins Melanoma Program Fund or Hospice of the Chesapeake.
