Mr. Kerr was born on March 14, 1930 in Liberty, Texas to John Abbott and Lola Duckworth Kerr. He passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2010 in Nacogdoches.

Monte grew up in Tinnerville, Texas. He graduated from Springhill High School and attended Marshall Baptist College. He joined the Marines in June 1948 and served his country for four years in the Korean War. Serving as a Corporal in the Marine Corps in the Marine rifle company in Korea on September 18, 1950 at 0345 near Kimpo airfield the attacking enemy had begun to over run some of his company's positions. When Corporal Kerr, age 20, serving as a machine gun squad leader, observed one of the enemy rushing a fellow Marine, he grabbed the Marine and pulled him to safety. He fearlessly endangered his own life, then shooting the enemy twice at point blank and then engaged in hand to hand combat. Corporal Kerr's heroic actions were in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service. Monte was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action and subsequently was promoted to Sergeant. Monte married Bonnie Rector on February 28, 1953 in Douglass, Texas and they were married for 56 wonderful years. He retired from International Paper after 15 years of employment
