Sharon E. Metcalfe Annapolis, Maryland Obituary

Sharon E. Metcalfe

Sharon Metcalfe died peacefully on February 24, 2021 at her home in Bowie. She was 84. Born Sharon Elizabeth Vieau in Syracuse, New York, to Donald and Ruth (nee Reichardt) Vieau, Sharon was an only child, raised in Syracuse during the end of the Depression and through World War II. A graduate of General Hospital of Syracuse University School of Nursing, Sharon married John R. Metcalfe of Harrison, NY in 1957. Sharon and John moved with their four children to the Overbrook section of Bowie, MD in 1966. Sharon worked many years for Bowie physician John Cosma. Sharon was a lover of art, books, music, and travel. Her domestic travel took her all over the United States, and her many international trips included Great Britain, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Norway, Russia, and Egypt. Sharon assisted her husband John with formation of the independent church New Covenant Church of Bowie in 1976, serving as church leaders in Bowie throughout the 1980s before moving on to Bread of Life Church in Glen Burnie, MD. There is nothing Sharon enjoyed more than a good story. A lover of stories and absurdities, Sharon often retold details of past adventures as she ferociously knit sweaters and baby blankets for her family, loved ones, and charity. Sharon found a great deal of comfort and friendship joining the Bowie Senior Chorale in the 1990s. She enjoyed the Thursday morning practices almost as much as the performances, and the chorale added to her stable of friends and stories. Her husband John died in 2010. Sharon is survived by her four children, Amy Gurtshaw of Bowie, MD, Laura Droppa, of Michigan, Susan Schiek of Bowie, MD, and Phillip Metcalfe of Sterling, VA, in addition to eleven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Sharon will be missed for her irreverent sense of humor, her devout loyalty to those she loved, her strongly held opinions, her early arrival to every event she attended, and the many, many sweaters she knit. A memorial service celebrating Sharon’s life will be held at a later date out of an abundance of caution due to COVID-19.
