Katalin Kalmar Schulman Obituary

Mrs. Katalin (Kathi) Kalmar Schulman, daughter of the late Miklos Kalmar and Agnes Kelemen Kalmar, died peacefully on March 3, 2021, at her home in Annapolis, Maryland, at the age of 73. She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Michael Israel Schulman; her son David Schulman and wife, Kim; daughter Jessica Farrar and husband Eric, her beloved grandchildren, Patrick, Rebecca, William, and Amelia, her sister, Julie Landstein and husband, Laszlo, in-laws Donna and Gerald Bender, Laurie and Richmond Dickerson, Jon Resnik, and many beloved nieces and nephews.Kathi was preceded in death by Michael's parents, Max and Muriel Schulman and sister, Deborah Resnik. Kathi was born on September 18, 1947, in Budapest, Hungary. She came to New York City with her family in 1956 as refugees, learning English in school and studying piano at the High School of Music and Arts. She graduated from Simmons College in 1968 as a mathematics major and spent her early career in engineering outside of Boston before having children. After moving to South Orange, NJ, Kathi co-owned a restaurant computer business with her husband and spent many years as a committed volunteer, tirelessly dedicating her time to her local school, library and planning boards. After her kids were older, Kathi enjoyed a second career in accounting, working for a variety of small businesses in NJ. She and her husband also enjoyed a short and happy time in the Lake Hopatcong area where they were active in the Garden State Yacht Club. After retiring, Kathi and Michael moved to Annapolis to be closer to family, which was always her top priority and greatest source of joy. She will be remembered for her self-less devotion to her loved ones, all of whom credit much of their individual accomplishments to her support and championship. Kathi was a tireless advocate for those in need, a witty and insightful friend, and the consummate hostess who enjoyed gathering friends and family for poolside meals. A memorial service is scheduled for March 12, 2021 at 11am at Temple Beth Shalom in Annapolis, MD for immediate family, and open to all via Zoom and a Zoom shiva for family and friends is scheduled for Saturday evening (please contact the synagogue for link). In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Mrs. Schulman's honor to the Holocaust Museum (donate.ushmm.org), the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (donate.lls.org), or any worthy organization of your choosing, as she believed that generosity in support of the most vulnerable was the greatest gift.
