Annye Penn Roberson

Annye Penn Roberson, a devoted mother, career librarian, a resident of San Francisco, California for 64 years, and a community advocate, died on Monday February 22, 2021 at the age of 99 years due to complications of chronic medical illnesses. Her passing occurred peacefully at home, with family present at the bedside. Annye was born in Dallas, Texas, on July 24, 1921, to the now-deceased Katie Adams Penn and Nathaniel Penn Sr. Her brother Nathaniel Penn Jr. and sister Ethyl Penn Washington are also deceased. Annye Penn Roberson graduated in 1938 from Booker T. Washington High School and 1942 from Prairie View State University. After graduating from college, she accepted the position of a librarian for the Dallas Public Library. Four years later, Annye moved to Oakland, California, to assume the role of Senior Librarian which she held for 39 years. In Oakland, Annye met and married Hugh Edward Roberson who is also deceased. Besides having an outstanding career as an information professional (Librarian), Annye studied music in college and became an accomplished pianist playing classical and contemporary music. Annye Roberson was motivated to help change lives behind the distinguished career by developing reading programs for children and adults. She supported organizations whose mission focused on education to lift and protect individuals from poverty and inform individuals of the benefit to being socially and politically involved in their community. Organizations and individuals, including the Cities of Oakland and San Francisco, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Community Living Campaign, and Michele and President Barack Obama have recognized Annie Roberson's desire to help people live better and reach their highest potential. Annye Roberson was a member of the congregation at "Fellowship Church" under Howard Thurman's leadership in earlier years and later Ingleside Presbyterian Church in San Francisco until failing health prevented her attendance. Traveling, dining with family and friends, music, reading, staying connected were secret joy ingredients to Annye. On many occasions, she explained her longevity to a belief in God and his grace, mercy, and love. Surviving family members are Charlotte Jan Roberson James daughter and Frederick W. James M.D. son-in-law; Nephews Ronald P. Washington and spouse; Darryl Vardell Washington and spouse; Great Nieces Rachele and Staci Washington; Shauna Washington; Grandchildren: Anne James Boyd; Frederick Roberson James; and Gregory Keith James; 11 great-grandchildren; and Cousins Clarence Evans (Sonny) and Charles D. Montgomery of Dallas, Texas.
