Robert Arthur McVey Obituary

Robert Arthur McVey (Bob McVey) passed away peacefully in San Pedro, California at the age of 91 years old to be reunited with his beloved wife, Elizabeth, and his daughters, Maureen, Michele, and Marlene McVey. He was a devoted father to Robert A. McVey Jr. (Carla) and Marilyn McVey and loving grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Robert was born in the Bronx, New York on January 14, 1930, the first of four children of Emma and James D. McVey. At 13 years of age, he met the love of his life, Elizabeth and would spend 60 years blissfully married. He was a veteran serving in the United States Coast Guard as a Radioman 3rd Class. In 1956, Bob began his 34-year career in law enforcement as a Patrolman for the New York Police Department. In 1958 after being recruited by the Los Angeles Police Department, he would move his family to California to begin his 31 years of service. Bob would work his way up through the ranks from Police Officer to Sergeant then to Lieutenant, retiring as a Captain III - Area Commander for the Harbor Area. Once arriving in the Harbor Area, he immersed himself in over 23 community groups receiving many awards including the Citizen of the Year in 1988 from the Los Angeles Area Council of Boy Scouts of America which praised him for his many years as a coordinator for the Explorer Scout Program. After retiring, Bob served for one year as Chief of Police for the City of Bullhead in Arizona. Bob had a passion for knowledge and learning. He took weekend and night courses to earn a Bachelor of Science from California State University, Los Angeles in Police Science and Administration, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, and his Juris Doctorate from South Bay University. He loved sharing his knowledge with his family and was always available to listen and give advice. After moving to San Pedro, California in 1983, Bob and his wife, Elizabeth, made long lasting friendships through the San Pedro Elks Lodge and the Dalmatian-American Club. His happiest times were when he was surrounded by family during holidays, special occasions, and on family vacations. Bob had a tremendous love for his family, friends, and life, and will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle. His family takes comfort in knowing that the Lord has welcomed him home into his loving arms. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, March 5, 2021, 1:00 p.m. at Green Hills Memorial Park.
