Mrs. Geraldine “Gerry” Ekdom, age 98, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City. There will be a funeral service on Friday, March 5, at 1:30pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Geraldine Mabel was born on her family’s farm north of Orange City, on February 22, 1923, the daughter of Dick and Mae (Muilenburg) De Cook. She attended country school through the eighth grade and later attended Northwestern Academy in Orange City, graduating in 1942. She was united in marriage to Stephen Adrian Ekdom on June 26, 1946, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. They moved to Ireton when Steve accepted a position at the high school. Later, he became a professor at Northwestern College and they moved to Orange City, where they raised their three children. Steve passed away on January 21, 2021, in Orange City, after more than 74 years of marriage. Gerry was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church where she participated in the women’s circles, bible studies, and went on several mission trips. She enjoyed volunteering, doing needlework, sewing, gardening, and playing the piano. Above all, her faith and family were the most important things in her life. Those left to honor and cherish her memory include her three children and their spouses, Barry (Rebecca Arbogast) Ekdom, of Washington, D.C., and their children, Noah and Claire; Barbara (Mark) Reece, of Des Moines, and son, Joe (Nicole) Spradling, and their children, Isabel, Tyler, and Eliana; Brenda (Richard) Hartig, of Dubuque, and their sons, Charlie (Katie) Hartig and their twins, Albert and Mathilda, and Wesley (Allie) Hartig and their children, Nora and James; a brother-in-law, Don Ekdom, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; two sisters-in-law, Irene Ekdom, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Marie Ekdom, of Pipestone, Minnesota; and a nephew and his wife, Doug and Linda Van Berkum, of Orange City. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Ann De Cook; a sister and her husband, Gertrude and Alvin Van Berkum; a niece, Glenda Van Berkum; two brothers-in-law, Wayne Ekdom and Adrian Ekdom; and a sister-in-law, Chris Ekdom. Memorials may be directed to the First Reformed Church.
