Shirley E. Thompson Obituary

Mother Dr. Shirley E. Thompson, 87, of Cincinnati, Ohio was called from labor to reward Saturday, February 27, 2021 at approximately 1:00 p.m. She was born November 14, 1933, in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late George Rice and Eliza Engleman Rice. Mother Thompson was the eldest of two children. She was affectingly known as “Grandma", "Granny", and "G-Granny”. Mother Dr. Thompson was educated in the Cincinnati Public School system. Later, she enrolled in the Pro-Role Black Owned Beautician School located in the West End during the 1960s. She graduated with her Manager's License and was a licensed beautician for well over 30 years, a profession she truly loved. Mother Dr. Thompson was baptized in the name of Jesus and received the gift of the Holy Ghost in 1973 at Bethel Apostolic Church, under the pastorate of Pastor Dr. Eva Carter. She later served under Pastor Dr. Carter's daughter, Pastor Dr. Donna Sanders, at Believers In Christ Apostolic Faith Church, where she served as Assistant Pastor. In 1995, being led by the Lord, she joined New Jerusalem Apostolic Temple under the leadership of pastor and founder, Bishop Dr. Alfred H. Nickles. Later, while under the leadership of Bishop Frank Tolliver, she was elevated to the position of 3rd Assistant Pastor of New Jerusalem Apostolic Temple. Mother Dr. Thompson served at New Jerusalem until her passing. She served faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Missionary Board, and as an Altar Worker. During her nearly 50 years of being saved and sanctified, Mother Dr. Shirley E. Thompson touched many lives and helped to birth many souls into the Kingdom of God. Through her hard work and dedication, Mother Dr. Thompson earned her degree of “Doctor of Ministry” from the International Apostolic College of Grace and Truth. She graduated Summa cum laude. Mother Dr. Thompson was united in holy matrimony to William Thompson in 1964. To this union were born two sons, Julio Thompson and Marcus Thompson. They were married until his passing in 1990. Mother Dr. Thompson loved her family very much and was always there when needed. She truly cherished all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A significant link in our family chain has truly been broken. She was the Matriarch of our family, but we know God is our keeper and sustainer. Mother Dr. Shirley E. Thompson leaves to cherish her memory: two children, her devoted and loving daughter, Eld. Cheryl H. Solomon, and her son, Julio L. Thompson; five grandchildren, Kevin (Tamar), Kim (Carlos), Jamie (Candiss), Eric (Sonia), and Christopher; sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; four nieces, Cookie, Vickie, Beverly, and Mitzi; first cousins, Charles Bea (Veronica); and George, Virgil, Ronnie, and James Engleman (all brothers). She also leaves to celebrate her life a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family, and friends; her adopted daughter, Evangelist Robin Gates, and the New Jerusalem Apostolic Temple church family. She was preceded in death by her parents; uncle, Bert Engleman; aunt, Hannah Engleman; son, Marcus E. Thompson; daughter, Karen G. Mason; brother, Robert Rice; and great-great-granddaughter, Lakeia. Funeral Service will begin at 4:00 PM with visitation an hour prior on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at New Jerusalem Apostolic Temple, 4019 Gilmore Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45209.
