Mariann "Scotty" Zitner Tarbell

<p>Mariann &ldquo;Scotty&rdquo; Zitner Tarbell, age 97, of Colfax, NC passed away on February 22, 2021. Scotty was born in Sagamore, Pennsylvania. She was the last surviving child of Mary Nagy Zitner and Alexander S. Zitner. Siblings Yollen, Elizabeth, Helen, Margaret, Celia, Andrew, Martin and Herbert preceded her in death. She grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio and Butler County, PA. She lived in Connecticut for 64 years before moving to Colfax, NC where she developed many new friendships and actively participated in community activities at River Landing at Sandy Ridge Retirement Community.</p> <p>She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in High Point, where she was welcomed in Christian fellowship. Scotty was known for her warm personality. She was married to Allan Brown Tarbell, who preceded her in death. They met in the Navy during World War II. After the war Scotty and Allan established a home in Windsor, Connecticut where they raised three children, Allan Brown Tarbell, Jr of Loudon, TN, Frank Tarbell of Holly Ridge,&nbsp; NC,&nbsp; and Sally Tarbell of Boulder, CO. Scotty was a devoted grandmother to six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.</p> <p>Scotty was especially proud of her Navy service, and it is remarkable that she started her Navy career at age 17 to join the war effort serving as a pharmacist mate. She was honored to participate in the Flight of Honor, where she and other veterans were flown to the WWII memorial in Washington DC.&nbsp;</p> <p>She was actively involved in community service throughout her life, including leadership roles in&nbsp; First Congregational Church in Windsor, CT, and the Navy WAVES. &nbsp;As busy as she was, she always took time to comfort family members and friends during difficult times. She will be greatly missed, but her spirit lives on in so many of the lives she touched. Her influence continues through the next generations who benefited from her loving care and friendship.
