He was born in Bradner, Ohio on April 10, 1932, a son of the late Lester and Helen (Sheeley) St. Clair. Merlon was one of fourteen children. He left school at a young age so he could help with the needs of his family. At the age of 17, Merlon enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement, Merlon worked for W. R Grace as a supervisor of Chemical and Specialty Materials for many years.
