ALSTON, ELOISE EDWARDS

September 11, 1920 – February 21, 2021, the seventh child of 11 siblings, born to George W. H. Edwards and Hattie F. Edwards, Crawfordville, Taliaferro County, Georgia.  God, by his divine mercy, in the early morning hours at 12:19 AM, Arcadia Assisted Living, Denton, MD, heard her name called.  She leaves to cherish her wonderful memory a daughter, Helen L Alston, three grandsons, Kevin, Keith and Kurtis, four great grands, five great, great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.  Willie Roberson was admired by Eloise as a son, his wife Juanita, their daughter LaNita (Jonathan) and their grandson McAllister will mourn her passing.  

Eloise retired from Federal Government, The Department of the Navy, Bureau of Ships, Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington, DC completing 38 years of successful service.  Eloise was employed by the City Government working for the D.C. Board of Election and Ethics.  She did not stop there; she served as a volunteer at the Department of Public Works, Keppler Associates, Inc., Providence Hospital, and The White House, serving under several Presidents to include Barak Obama.     

Eloise was a member of the Ladies User Board No. 2, The Missionary Society, The Agape Sunday School Class, The C. T. Murray Memorial Club, and Leader of Naomi Circle, as well as singing with the Consoling Choir. 

Continuing her service to community, Eloise held membership with and joined numerous clubs, organizations, and associations; received recognitions, local and national grand honors, trophies, and citations.  Received letters from:  Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Interdenominational Church Ushers Association of Washington, DC and Vicinity, Inc., Phyllis Wheatly YWCA, Inc., Speaker of the House of Republicans, Nancy Pelosi, Savannah State DC Chapter Alumni, just to name a few. 

On June 2, 2018 at the age of 97, Eloise received a Honorary Degree of Associate of Humane Letters by Savannah State University’s President, Mrs. Cheryl D. Dozier at Candle Light Cove Assisted Living Center, Easton, MD.

After residing at 1368 Underwood Street, NW., Washington, DC over 55 plus years and a brief stopover in Springdale, MD, due to health issues, relocated in Easton, MD.  In January 2019, Eloise transferred to the Neurocognitive Clinic at Bayleigh Chase, Easton Shore, MD.  After a brief stay, she relocated, admired and cared for until her passing (five years, same month and date, of the passing of the last sibling Ralph Edwards) at Arcadia Assisted Living of Denton, MD.  

A private grave side service and interment will be held at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery, Washington, DC, Thursday, March 4, 2021, 12 Noon, Rev. Isaac Fox, Vermont Avenue Baptist Church, Washington, DC, officiating where Eloise attend for over 75 years.

The family extends a most endearing and special thanks to Eloise’s nephew, Hosea and his wife Grace Stripling, Centreville, MD, for their generous dedication facilitating the needs and desires of Eloise.  A special acknowledgement to Janice Young for being Eloise’s dependable caregiver and friend through her health issues and accompanying Helen on the many trips across Bay Bridge to visit.
