Wilmalee Hughes Bakerfield, California Obituary

Wilmalee Hughes

You were an angel in the shape of our Mom Spread your wings as you go And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah You're home Wilmalee Hughes, 90, was reunited with her husband and heavenly family, her loving daughters by her bedside on February 26, 2021. Born in Taft California on 12/3/1930 to Bill and Carrie Mae Warner, she was one of six children. Her childhood days on the Kern river always brought back wonderful memories. As a young child mom came down with whooping cough and was not expected to live, but her strong will prevailed and with her mother holding her all night long, she lived for 90 years. When Mom met Dad, she dubbed him the “ugliest boy she ever saw,” but it didn’t take long for Dad’s whit to win her over, they spent the next 70 years together. Mom attended Aztec, Standard and Bakersfield High School. She worked at Brocks Department store downtown. She worked in the attendance department at North High School before retiring. After “retirement” she worked with Dad and many wonderful friends driving cars for Avis for 20 more years. As an adventure and to be close to their youngest Daughter and her children, they moved to Blackwell, Texas where they made many lifetime friends and enjoyed one of the best times of their lives. After 8 years in Texas they returned home – Oildale, Ca. They could be found many mornings at the Sugar Mill in Oildale visiting with their extended family and many friends. Our Mother was the glue that held our family together, providing us with a magical childhood. Christmas was Moms! From decorations to brightly wrapped gifts, mom made everyone feel the joyous spirit of the season. Her children were her life, she gave her all to them. We are so pleased that both our parents lived long enough to see the people that we have become – because of the values they have instilled in our lives. Mom was preceded in death by her husband Bill; Her parents, three brothers; Billy, Wallace & Larry Warner. She is survived by her daughters Catherine Smith, Carrie McWhorter, her son Rick Hughes. Seven much loved Grandchildren and 11 beautiful Great Grandchildren. Her loving sister & best friend for life, Barbara (Warner) Fields, niece Jamie Thornberry, her brother Paul Warner.
