THOMAS E. “TOM” CLAPSHAW Thomas E. “Tom” Clapshaw, 92, a lifelong native of the Forest grove community, died Thursday afternoon, February 25, 2021 at his home. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at the Hillside Cemetery, 49820 N.W. Clapshaw Hill Road in Forest Grove, with Pastor Dan Bohlken, retired, officiating. THOMAS EUGENE CLAPSHAW was born May 6, 1928 in Forest Grove, Oregon, the son of the late Wilbur John Clapshaw and Louise (Donovan) Clapshaw. He was raised and received his education in the Forest Grove community, having been a graduate of the Forest Grove High School Class of 1947. Upon his high school graduation, he attended carpenter apprentice school. He was a Veteran of the Korean conflict, having joined the United States Army on October 25, 1950 in Portland, Oregon. Tom served for two years, until receiving his honorable discharge on August 21, 1952 at Fort Lewis, Washington at the rank of Private First Class. He received several decorations including the Army Occupational Medal (Japan), the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Overseas Badge. Tom was united in marriage to Pearl June Oppenlander on May 22, 1955 in the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest Grove. Following their marriage, they resided in the Forest Grove community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl, on October 15, 2016 in Forest Grove, after celebrating over sixty-one years of marriage together. Tom had worked as apprentice carpenter in the residential and commercial construction industry for Phelps Construction Company in Forest Grove for several years. Moving on to several commercial construction companies, ending his union carpenter association with Henry Mason Company where he built the present United Church of Christ and several buildings at Pacific University. He later owned and operated Tom Clapshaw Construction Company for many years, until he retired. He was lifelong and active member of the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, the Carpenter’s Union Local #2130 in Portland, a member of the Forest Grove Camera Club and was a lifelong member of the Mazamas. Tom and Pearl served as a campground hosts for the Oregon State Park System for several years. Their favorite campgrounds included Nehalem Bay, Cape Lookout and Bullards’s Bay State Parks. Among his special interests, he enjoyed photography, hiking, camping and traveling. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Louise Clapshaw and his brother, Dale Clapshaw. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jim Harrington, of Hillsboro, Oregon, his son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Laurie Clapshaw, of Forest Grove, Oregon; his sister-in-law and spouse, Arlene and Richard Coon, of Portland, Oregon and his brothers-in-law and their spouses, Harold and Lonna Oppenlander, of McMinnville, Oregon and Butch and Rayella Oppenlander, of Warrenton, Oregon. Also surviving are his five grandchildren and their spouses, Erik and Heather Harrington, of Beaverton, Oregon; Sean Harrington and Nicole Menzel, of Seattle, Washington; Jason Clapshaw, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Michael and Megan Clapshaw, of Forest Grove, Oregon and Brian Clapshaw, of Forest Grove, Oregon; his six great-grandchildren, Emma Harrington; Conor Harrington; Jeremy Clapshaw; Morgan Clapshaw; Miles Clapshaw and Corbin Clapshaw and several nieces and nephews.
