John Jacob Wilhelm Obituary

John Jacob Wilhelm II, 48, entered into glory with the Lord, in peace, on February 22, 2021. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, John was a top graduate of Detroit Catholic Central (‘91) and then a student at the University of Michigan. Son to Paul John Wilhelm and Linda Diane Eddy. Survived by his brother Paul Anthony Wilhelm (Amanda Price Wilhelm), and sisters, Maria T. Sewell (Jason D. Sewell) and Elizabeth A. Stafford (Scott E. Stafford). Uncle to eight nieces and nephews, nephew to loving aunts and uncles, and cousin to many admiring cousins.

John met life with courage, and a joyful and giving spirit, full of grace. While brilliant, ambitious and capable in body, mind and spirit, he did not pursue the path of his own comfort, but rather the path of giving, relationships and service. John was injured in July 1993 serving others in California, and then lived a life of service to his father and family as a long-term traumatic brain injury survivor, from age 20 until his passing. John lived at home, wheelchair-bound with his father, Paul, since 1995. Both pre and post injury, John was a light to all he met. He was a leader in his youth group at Trinity Presbyterian Church and later in college years a youth leader and campus leader, and participated in several community programs post-injury. John lit up the room, had patience for those in pain, and was never one to cut short a conversation. He took no sympathy regarding his injury or condition, yet always showed thanks to those who cared for him. In his long post-injury life, John exceeded nearly every prediction. Post-injury, John’s faith in Christ did not diminish, and he persevered and did not despair, to the end.
