Graeme Nicholson Obituary

Graeme Alexander Nicholson died February 21st, 2021, at Fergus, Ontario, at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife Linda Nicholson, his son Luke Nicholson, his sister-in-law Marilyn Nicholson and extended family. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he came from a clerical family and was predeceased by his father, Dr. C.M. Nicholson, OC, his mother, Ethel Nicholson, and his brother David Nicholson, of London, England. Emeritus Professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto and professor there for thirty-six years Graeme Nicholson taught generations of students and trained many scholars in continental philosophy. Educated in Canada, the United States, and Germany, he prepared for the Christian ministry but elected for a career in philosophy instead, going on to write books on phenomenology, hermeneutics, ontology, Plato, and his principal subject, the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, as well as the work of a mentor and friend, Hans-Georg Gadamer. Service and community work was also important to Graeme and he seldom went any period of his life without engagement in a collective project he thought worthy. As much as his participation in public life was communal, his views were original and individual, and few who knew him well intellectually or spiritually are left without the treasured memories of many conversations. www.grahamgiddyfh.com
