Jackie ROLLANS

It is with regret and sadness that we announce the passing of Jacqueline (Jackie) Rollans following an extended illness.

She was predeceased by her parents, John (Jack) & Gertrude (Gertie) Carroll; sister, Shirley Lytle and spouses Eddie Matan and Don Rollans.

She is survived by her children, Robert Carroll and Nicole Rollans and granddaughter, Zoe Carroll all of Port Alberni; her stepdaughter, Michele Rollans of Edmonton and their spouses. She had a large extended family primarily located in Alberta and BC.

Jackie led a very interesting life! She was widowed at a young age and chose to respond to her loss by undertaking an adventure. She moved to Hawaii alone in the early 1960s without knowing anyone or having familiarity with the islands. She faced challenges and opportunities with relentless vigour and commitment! She was known as a strong and elegant woman who held her head up high and fought hard for what she believed in.

Professionally, she built a very successful career in Public Affairs broadcasting. She began as a secretary but helped shatter the glass ceiling by being one of the first women to advance to an executive role at CBC Radio in Edmonton. She eventually retired as station manager at CKUA radio for the ACCESS Educational Network after 40+ years in the industry. On a daily basis, she met and interacted with some of the most famous and important people of her generation. Her innate curiosity and creative vision had meaningful influence on many people’s views of their world.

In her personal life, she raised her family well with limitless love and support. She was a good friend to many and a gracious hostess to all those who she entertained with her delicious cooking, good will and exuberant charm. Her intelligence, talents, patience and humour brought out the best in others and made everyone feel welcome, comfortable, and appreciated.

Jackie’s golden years were spent in the Qualicum Bay area on Vancouver Island where she finally had the opportunity to live in her beloved oceanfront home... after making it available to friends and family for their vacations since the 1980s. Her hobbies included baking, cooking and entertaining when not enjoying the scenery during walks on her favourite beach located just outside her door. 

It was her wish to be celebrated rather than mourned. An event of her design will be planned once the pandemic restrictions are lifted and her friends and family can gather in her honour and share their love and memories.

 Her family wishes to extend their gratitude for the care and kindness she received during her long illness by the staff of Rainbow Gardens in Port Alberni. Please donate to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
