Dr. Manuel B. Datiles, III

DR. MANUEL (“Manny”) B. DATILES III, 69, OF ROCKVILLE, MD passed away peacefully in Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC on February 12, 2021 surrounded by his family. Dr. Datiles was an esteemed ophthalmologist at the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH)/ National Eye Institute (NEI) for over 30 years. After completing his surgical fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, he practiced at NIH as a top eye surgeon as well as primary cornea and cataract principal investigator, and later NEI Chief of Cataract and Cornea. He led groundbreaking projects with NASA and Hopkins in the search to find a cure for cataracts and received the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Innovators Award in 2011. He returned to Johns Hopkins Medicine as adjunct professor in 2017. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jacqueline, as well as their six children and four grandchildren: Michelle, Joyce (married to Robert Nield), Margaret (married to Jordan Watts, they have three children: Blaise, Aurelia, and William), Jennifer, Manuel (married to Mu Yang), and Michael; and two sisters, Therese and Chelo. A Catholic funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s in Rockville, MD. Mass attendance will be limited to immediate family.
