Gunther left a space in our lives and hearts that can never be filled.

He had a full life, with many experiences, from being a young soldier in Germany, to becoming a marine engineer and travelling the world on steam ships. He immigrated to Canada, where he eventually landed in Hay River, NWT and worked for NTCL on the MV Kakisa as her engineer until his retirement. He was also a talented tradesperson and was ticketed in multiple trades, and a talented artist who used his skills to make beautiful copper bowls and trays.

During the off season he built a beautiful house in Sechelt, BC where he and his wife Christine, raised two daughters, and where he later retired and lived until his passing. He was always outside and was very proud of his beautifully landscaped yard. He loved to talk to people who stopped at the driveway. Gunther was an older father, and to his girls, the world. He was always home with them after his retirement, while Christine continued to work up North for a time. He was up early with the ship’s clock dinging in the kitchen and made sure there was breakfast on the table, lunch for school made, and supper together as a family. His grandchildren adored and looked up to him, and were always after him to tell them stories of his world travels. He spent many hours at the kitchen table, patiently preparing food for his family, and spinning tales over coffee.

He will be greatly missed, but his legacy lives on through his family
