Tempa M. Grebe Obituary

Tempa Mae Grebe was born on November 5, 1924 in Carlisle, KY to Shellie and Edward Greene. While still an infant she, along with her brothers and sister: Heber, Thurmond, Ewell, Laura, and Fernald moved to a farm in Hillsboro, Ohio. Tobacco was the main crop along with pigs, chickens, and corn. Tempa loved to share many stories about growing up on a farm during the depression. When she was 17, she moved in with her brother’s family in Fairborn, Ohio where she was able to work at Wright Patterson Airforce Base during World War 2. She worked in the Air Service Command Civil Service where she was a waitress serving colonels. She was promoted to the executive dining room where the Generals ate. Feeling like she wanted to be more directly helpful to the troops, she transferred and was learning how to repair planes with sheet metal and repair airplane pistons, with the goal of going overseas. The war ended, however, before she completed her training. Following the war, Tempa moved to Toledo, Ohio to be closer to her best friend and sister, Laura Kimberly. She worked as a waitress at the Purple Cow where she met George Edward Grebe, Jr. They dated for 7-8 months before George, at a live show, proposed to her. They were married 4 months later. They had three daughters: Joyce Ann Lee, Deborah Lee (Richard) Theiss, and Terri Lyn (Randy) Savory. Tempa was an adventurous woman. While visiting her granddaughter and her husband, Lesa and David in Florida, she rode her first roller coaster at the age of 70. When she was 92, she traveled to the Grand Canyon, which was on her bucket list. While on that trip, she enjoyed her first helicopter ride viewing Lake Powel and landing on Tower Butte. She charmed the young pilot, as she was known to do, and in turn he took the long way back to the airport! Did I mention that she camped during the entire two and half weeks?! Tempa loved camping and spent much time with her daughter Debbie and son-in-law, Rick and daughter Terri and son-in-law Randy. Sitting around the campfire and roasting hot dogs (her favorite food) were her favorite activities. Tempa loved having family over for parties and cookouts. She was known for her potato salad, Red Astoria Cake, grandma cookies, and many Christmas cookies and candies. Cookouts on the 4th of July and Christmas Eve parties were fun and memorable occasions with lots of fun, food, and laughter. She loved her family and friends ferociously. Smiles, kind words, hugs greeted new acquaintances. However, if she felt her family was being attacked her gentle 4 ft 6-inch soul turned into an 8-foot momma bear. Tempa left her earthly family on Feb 12, 2021 and was welcomed home by cheers, hugs, and shouting by her Heavenly family. She was preceded in death by her husband George, loving daughter Joyce, grandson Christopher, her brothers and sister, and precious dogs: Molly, Princess, Bub and Barrymore. Left to cherish her memory and carry on her love of family and adventurous spirit are daughters: Debbie (Rick) Theiss and Terri (Randy) Savory; Grandchildren: Lesa (David), Shellie, Trisha (Allen), Sarah (Matt), Maelyn, and Kayla. Great Grandchildren: Brittany, Madison, Xavier, Savannah, Faith, Luke, Levi, Jackson, and Willow and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Special four-legged doggies: Bella, Emma, Izzy, and Sadie. The family would especially like to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the wonderful care given to not only Tempa but to her family. A special thank you to Dee, her hospice nurse and her hospice aide, Dawn. Both provided tender and loving care for which we are so very grateful. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest the following organizations. Tempa was a huge dog lover and donations can be made to the Toledo Humane Society, 827 Illinois Ave., Maumee, Ohio 43537. To help continue the work they do, donations can be made online to Northwest Ohio Hospice by going online at hospicenwo.org Arrangements are being handled through the Toledo Cremation Society. Due to COVID, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later time. Gone From My Sight by Henry Van Dyke I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. Then, someone at my side says, “There she is gone!” “Gone where?” Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just as the moment when someone at my side says, “There she is gone!” There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes!” And that is dying.
