Donald Douglas Lanese Obituary

Donald Douglas Lanese of West Bloomfield Michigan died at the age of 89 on February 12, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born in Cleveland, OH on December 13, 1931 to John and Marie Lanese and raised in a convivial Italian family with nine aunts and uncles, many cousins, and lots of good Italian food. He was a graduate of Case Institute of Technology, where he received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1955 and a M.S. in Engineering Administration in 1962. He valued education and was immensely proud of the academic achievements of his children and grandchildren. He had a long career as an engineer in the automotive industry, working at Eaton Corporation and ZF, North America. He enjoyed cars all his life, and his daughters have happy memories of watching The Indy 500 and other races with him. The photo of him here was taken the day he got to drive a few laps in a Ferrari F430 with his grandson Alex and son-in-law Jim. He was a happy man that day. Don loved the beautiful lakes of northern Michigan. He especially loved the Sleeping Bear Dunes and sailing across Crystal Lake with his daughters. He was a quiet, kind man who loved his family deeply. We are grateful for the blessing of his long, happy life. His heart is at rest, and we will hold him in our hearts forever. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Ingrid; daughters, Lynn Lanese and Jeanne Lanese Riek (Jim); grandchildren, Gregory Gumina, William Gumina, Alexander Riek, and Callan Riek; great-grandchildren, Charlie Gumina and R.J. Gumina; stepdaughter, Tina Wegner (Vern); step-grandchildren, Brian Wegner and Krystal Wegner; brother, Alvin Lanese (Mimi); nephew, Gregory Lanese and niece, Kristina Lanese. He is also survived by his former wife, Helen Bacher, with whom he remained friends. A Memorial Service will take place at Christ Church Cranbrook, Bloomfield Hills, MI later this year when it’s safe to gather together and celebrate Don’s life. The family requests that any remembrances be made in his name to the American Heart Association.
