Pura was born on February 22, 1923, in Galicia, A Coruna, Spain, in the town of Bergondo. Following her marriage to Jose Antonio Carames in the early 1950s, she immigrated to New York City and became a naturalized citizen to join her husband, who had previously immigrated to NYC from the same area in Spain. Upon immigration, she and her husband became part of a group of immigrants from Spain that settled in South Brooklyn and Manhattan’s West 14th Street area in the early and middle part of the 20th century. They lived in a vibrant and culture-rich South Brooklyn community from the 1950s to the early 1970s, moving to the Lower East Side in the 1970s, where she lived until her passing. She was a true New Yorker of immigrant roots, with strong values and a sense of family. Loved by many, she was known for her caring, giving, and family loving nature.
Pura was predeceased by her husband Jose Antonio Carames, her two sisters, and three brothers. She is survived by her only son J. Anthony Carames, his wife Donna, and her two grandchildren, Anthony Peter and Jacqueline, who she loved very much. She is also survived by numerous members of her husband’s family and their children, who also loved and cherished her dearly
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
