Dorothy Jean Knode, age 86, of Greencastle, passed away peacefully February 12,
2021 at the Waynesboro Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born
July 16, 1934 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania to Paul and Hilda Black. She married
Travis D. Knode, on June 10, 1956, 64 years ago.
In her early years she worked at United Telephone Company, drove a school bus
for Greencastle-Antrim School District and worked at High’s and Rutters. Her and
her husband had also owned Knode’s Grocery and Hillcrest Drive-In.
Jean is survived by her husband, two daughters, Teresa (Lee) Barnes and Lisa
(Steve) Diffenbaucher and son Curtis Knode, grandchildren Travis (Emily) Barnes,
Derek (Cris) Barnes, Tara (Justin) Reed, Jeremy Barnes and Holly Upperman, great
grandchildren Colton, Landon, Emma, Chloe, Parker and Lucas and step-
grandchildren Zach, Gage, Kenzie and Maddy and Jay. She was also survived by
several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters Virginia
Starliper, Helen Harne, Judy Goshorn and three brothers Richard, William and
Robert Black.
Jean loved sitting outside admiring her flowers and watching nature. She enjoyed
watching the grandkids swimming in the pool and having family get togethers.
Her favorite times were any that she was surrounded by family or friends. She had
a huge, caring heart and made sure everyone was always taken care of.
Jean was an inspiration to many. She survived cancer several times with grace.
Her battles have inspired many, especially her grandchildren, to care for others.
She always encouraged her family to stick together and always work out their
differences because you never know what tomorrow will bring.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Waynesboro
Hospital. Jean loved the attention she received there and spoke fondly of her
nurses and aides. She, along with her family, were treated with love, dignity, and
kindness, especially during her last days on Earth. They would also like to thank
the nurses and therapists from Spirit Trust Lutheran Home Care and Hospice.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
