Rev. J. Bruce Catron

<p><strong>Rev. J. Bruce Catron</strong>, age 86, originally of Pennington Gap, Virginia and more recently of Hopewell, Virginia and the Masonic Home of Virginia in Henrico, died Friday, February 12, 2021. He was born in Pennington Gap, Virginia on August 28, 1934 to the late Joris B (Jargo) Catron and Ada Grace Richards Catron.</p> <p>He graduated from Pennington High School in 1951 at the age of 16. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee and his Master of Arts Degree from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky.</p> <p>Rev. Catron served as pastor of First Congregational Christian Church in Hopewell since August, 1989. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pennington Gap for over 40 years and had been affiliated with Wesley United Methodist Church in Hopewell from 1974 to 1989. He was a former supply pastor of numerous rural churches in the Big Stone Gap District of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was a 65-year member, former secretary, and Past Master of Miles Lodge #165 A. F. &amp; A. M. in Pennington Gap and was a member and Past Master of DuPont Lodge #289, A. F. &amp; A. M. in Hopewell. He was Chaplain of Edwards Lodge, A. F. &amp; A. M. in Stoney Creek, VA and Dinwiddie Lodge, A. F. &amp; A. M.&nbsp; in Dinwiddie, VA. He was a member and Past High Priest of Union Royal Arch Chapter, No. 7 Petersburg, VA. He was appointed Grand Chaplain of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Virginia for 2004-2005 and 2011-2012 and was District Deputy Grand High Priest in 2011-2012. He was Prelate of Appomattox Commandery No. 6, Knights Templar, in Petersburg. He was Past Sovereign Master and Chaplain of Carl Frank Wood Council No. 200, Allied Masonic Degrees, in Petersburg. He was a former member of Pennington Gap Town Council and served as Town Clerk and Chairman of the Police Commission. He was a former school teacher and principal in Lee County, Virginia and Roane County, Tennessee before moving to eastern Virginia where he was an Education Specialist at the U.S. Army Quartermaster School at Fort Lee, VA, a position from which he retired in 1994. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a former instructor at St. Leo University at Fort Lee and was an income tax preparer and Basic Income Tax Course Instructor for H&amp;R Block for 35 years. He has also been associated with Ingram and Associates in Hopewell as a real estate agent.</p> <p>He was predeceased by his parents; step-mother, Marcella Catron; baby twin sisters; step brothers Ronnie and Gary Gilliam and step sister, Teresa Standifer.</p> <p>He is survived by his former wife, Patsy E. Tyler; daughters Vickie C. Kimbrell (Dorsey, Jr. ) and Dorothy Grace Catron; step sons COL (Ret.) Ronald K. Hann, Jr. (Marsha) and Jeffrey C. Hann (Ellen); 8 grandchildren SSG (USAF) Cody Kimbrell, Ian Michael Hann, Kayleigh Elbourn, Kristina Betler, Erica Varnum, Kortlin Tench, Sarah Hann and Kaitlyn&nbsp; ---; 9 great grandchildren, Zackary and Loghan Elbourn, Kaydence and Peyton Elbourn, Kylie Morgan, Khloe, Kynleigh Mae, and Kaisley Betler, and Nani Tench; step-brother Roger Gilliam; several cousins and many friends.</p> <p>Visitation will be from 9:30 until 10:30 AM Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA. He will be buried in Cecil Cemetery in Pennington Gap, VA on Thursday, February 18th at 11:00 a.m. There will be a memorial service at First Congregational Christian Church, 306 Memorial Avenue, Hopewell, VA on Saturday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m.</p> <p>In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Congregational Christian Church in Hopewell, VA or to the Masonic Home of Virginia in his memory.
