Aleksandar Georgievski Obituary

Aleksandar Georgievski "Alek" "Alex" "Cane" Aleksandar Georgievski, known to his friends as "Alek", "Alex", "Cane" and more affectionately as "Dr G", passed away peacefully on February 12th, 2021. Son of Mihailo and Bena Grujovich, predeceased by sister Milica, survived by his loving wife Helen "Elka", brother Risto (Dobrila), daughter Susan (Stephen) and son Emil (Claudie), adored Dedo of Ryan (Rashmi), Daniel, Jolianne and Zacharie. Aleksandar was born November 9th, 1926 in Krstoar, near Bitola, Macedonia. After interruptions to high-school with a year spent in the army during WWII, he entered the Faculty of Medicine at Skopje University graduating in 1951. He subsequently obtained his Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the School of Medicine at Zagreb University in 1953. He specialized as an Ob-Gyn for several years in Skopje, Macedonia before deciding he wanted to be a surgeon. Denied his pursuit by local officials and determined, he decided to take a chance and uprooted his young family moving to Toronto in 1958. Living with his parents who had emigrated to Canada earlier, he studied and wrote his Canadian medical exams obtaining his medical diploma from Queen's University, School of Medicine in 1960 while concurrently interning at Toronto East General Hospital in 1958 and The Doctor's Hospital in 1959. He ran his own private family medical practice before joining Shouldice Hospital as a surgeon in 1962 quickly becoming an expert in the renowned Shouldice hernia repair technique. After more than thirty years and many thousands of successful hernia repairs, he became Surgeon-in-Chief at Shouldice from 1995 to 2000 after which time he became a trainer and assisted in surgeries and patient examinations before fully retiring in 2013. Aleksandar was deeply involved in the Macedonian community in Toronto and played an active role in the establishment of the first Macedonian Orthodox church in Canada in 1962 - St Clement of Ohrid. He gave freely of his time, working on social committees, fund-raising for causes such as the Canadian Macedonian Place Foundation, and serving as President and Vice-President multiple times on the Church Board of Directors. Selfless and acutely aware of the struggles faced by newly arrived Canadian-Macedonians, he provided friendship, moral support and assistance in times of need. Golfing became a passion later in life, mostly for the camaraderie it afforded; he loved it almost as much as the regular Macedonian coffee-club socials he rarely missed. His family is grateful for the wonderful support and care provided by the Wexford Residence doctors, nurses, personal support workers and staff who looked after Aleksandar and ensured his comfort and well-being throughout his stay there. A small private funeral service will be held at St Clement of Ohrid Macedonian Orthodox Church with interment following at York Cemetery.
