Duane E. Kallen, Jr. Obituary

Duane Kallen Jr., known to friends and family as Ed, Eddie—and more importantly, Dad and Papa—passed away quietly at Backus Hospital on January 9, 2021, while watching the Bills knock the Colts out of the playoffs. Ed was born in Newport, Rhode Island, to Duane Kallen Sr., and Lois Kallen on January 16, 1961. He grew up moving up and down the east coast as the son of a serviceman until his family settled in Ledyard, Connecticut. A man who liked to work with his hands, Ed worked as a mechanic, became a certified Harley Davidson mechanic, and spent most of his adult life building houses in central Florida. Ed enjoyed spending time outdoors with the occasional hike or fishing trip, and could most frequently be found standing around shooting the breeze with friends. Ed recently returned to Connecticut to spend time with his family, tackle projects around his parents’ house, and enjoy watching the antics of his two grandchildren, Rayne and Kayden. He will be dearly missed by the two of them, and his daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Paul Woodin of Groton. Ed’s siblings, Bruce (Janene) Kallen of San Diego, California, and sister, Kimberly (Mark) Araujo of Preston, Connecticut, will miss all of his antics, as will his nieces and nephews. He was greeted upon his passing by his parents, Duane and Lois. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there are no current plans for a memorial service; however, Ed’s family is planning to host a celebration of life ceremony in the spring to honor his life and the life and memory of his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in their honor may be made to the Woyasz & Son Funeral Service who is assisting the family with the planning for Ed, Duane and Lois’ memorial. Donations may be made to the funeral home by mail at: 141 Central Ave., Norwich, CT 06360, or through the Woyasz Online Payment Center by following this link: https://www.woyaszandson.com/services/payment-center. An obituary for Duane and Lois Kallen was published by the family in the New London Day on January 24, 2021.
