Here is a summary of Betty’s great life. She gave her life to the Lord at the age of 3 when she heard the Lord speak to her while sitting beside her Mother at Aldersgate Methodist Church. This was the foundation for her behavior and experiences for the rest of her life. Initially, Betty and her family lived at 419 W. Lubbock St. and she attended Collins Gardens Elementary School. Later, her family moved to 555 General Kruger Blvd. and she attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary, Edison Junior High and was in the first graduating class (1959) of the “new” Edison High School on Santa Monica. Also, she subsequently attained three years of a college education. Betty loved all creatures. In fact, as a child she would even preach to the spiders in her backyard because she was so excited about sharing the Good News. She also loved the outdoors, the arts, music, and especially dancing. Photography and writing were also favorite activities. She was very excited about every aspect of life and lived like every second was the last. Daily, Betty always gave thanks to our Father for her health, family, friends and His beautiful world. Betty has served in many roles, but she is most appreciative of being a child of God! Her purpose in life has been to share God’s joy in every circumstance. Betty has claimed the Greek meaning of the word enthusiasm (God within) to define her life and to encourage others to claim it for their lives as well. She has been a visionary who has committed her life to instilling vision in others. Though her first love was her desire to serve God’s people and the community, this was closely followed by her love of being a stay-at-home Mom, raising two sons, and rejoicing that she had been chosen to be their Mom. Betty always felt it was the greatest honor bestowed on her by God. She volunteered every year for the boys to be their home room mother. She designed and made the formal curtains for the stage and first flag for Locke Hill Elementary School. She was also a Carnival chairman who was the first to have a double decker bus for everyone to have the opportunity to ride in and a hot air balloon for everyone to experience being in one. In the 1960’s, she gave support to the Community Affairs Team that promoted HemisFair – the World’s Fair of 1968 in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to traveling the world throughout the 70s and 80s, she co-owned and operated several successful businesses. During other times, she used her talents as an interior decorator and also taught Jr. High, Senior High, and College Sunday School classes. In addition, Betty worked with the Methodist Youth Foundation. She created and raised funds to create The Back Door, the first community Youth Center of its kind in San Antonio associated with Colonial Hills Methodist Church, where she taught and inspired hundreds of youth each week for nine years or more. Before the Youth Center was built, her home was open every weekend for youth to gather, dance, play table games and eat. Fun was had by everyone present. Plus she served in many positions on the board of Colonial Hills Methodist Church. In the mid-80’s, she discovered herself embracing the needs of the elderly by her grandmother’s request. She accepted the position as the Admissions Director for the Vance Jackson Assisted Living facility. Then, she was asked to be the First Executive Director of the Council On Independent Living (COIL) serving people with severe disabilities. This assignment turned out to be the greatest challenge yet provide the most blessings in her life. While at COIL, she helped develop guidelines for the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. After leaving COIL in 1993, she became co-owner and CEO of two businesses with her son Clark Taylor Godfrey – DriveRite of North America, Inc. (was the first Driving School to receive an award for being an ’Exemplary School’ from the Texas Education Agency). The other company was Clark as the photographer, Betty the wedding planning for Wedding and Celebration Fantasies. She felt she was honored by having the opportunity to work with both sons in different businesses. She also worked with her second son Zachry Taylor Godfrey with Card Service International. Since 1994, she has served as Chairperson of WitnesSing Ministries, a non-profit organization dedicated to spread the word of God through witness and song for her Goddaughter Jana Smoot Fox. By the way, Jana gave Betty the nickname “G.G.” standing for Godly Godmother. Betty has always been so grateful for all the opportunities to work with her children. Betty says the most exciting moment of the 90’s was when she was reintroduced to Dan M. Scarborough at the 35th reunion of the Class of 1959 of Edison High School. Believing that the Holy Spirit brought them together, they were united as husband and wife six months later on May 7, 1995. She loved all of life, all of God’s people, and appreciated every moment she was given to live on His earth. She loved to cook, sew, work in the garden, watched the birds and animals in her yard. Betty also participated in a variety of activities including swimming, water and snow skiing, bowling, roller skating, all kinds of dancing. She enjoyed music, going to the theater, traveling and visiting with friends. She truly loved it all. She celebrated every holiday with every ounce of her being with decorations, food, and family and friends. Family was everything with their Savior in the middle. God has blessed Betty through several “close calls” because He was not ready for her to be in Heaven at that time. She believes that God left her on earth to serve God until He was ready for her. She almost died once in a car on fire; she had cancer and it disappeared; and she missed getting a lung transplant after she was prepared for surgery because the doctor noticed that she was still on PLAVIX – a blood thinner that could have caused her to bleed out. Most significantly, she had an out-of-body experience when she was bleeding from a hysterectomy. This taste of Heaven was an awesome experience and fostered her attitude that when her time came, she would be sad to leave the earth but looked forward to spending eternity with Jesus. We know that Betty would want everyone who is reading this to know that they are truly loved by their Savior and her. She believed when friends are connected, it is a spiritual alliance between two souls and gives more rhythm and melody to life. Please know that she felt each of you have a beautiful spirit. She believed you helped her to become who she was, and you helped her to be able to do what she did to serve. You each have treasured moments and stories that were shared just between you two and that will be with you forever. Know that each of you meant the world to her. She loved adventure and lived by her faith constantly. She truly believed that God was in charge. She had no hesitation or doubt. Betty said: “Just have faith! Have integrity and be loyal. You know you were loved deeply by me. Blessings to you all – live with God’s love and with His joy.” We know that Betty will be waiting for you in Heaven with her Betty smile. Here are several testimonies she received during her productive life. You will no doubt add to this for the benefit of her family and friends at:

The Back Door – Community Youth Center. Presented to Betty “Mama” Godfrey. With gratitude from the volunteers of the summer of 1986. In recognition of your time, talents and enthusiasm. WE LOVE YOU! Sharing The Joy – This is what Jean S. Nettelfield wrote on May 27, 1987 when she edited her book: She is simple, yet complex; She is deep, yet lighthearted; She is serious, yet silly; She is laughing, yet can cry; She is strong, yet so gentle; She is loving, yet knows no hate; She is enthusiastic, yet seems tireless; She is happy, yet knows sadness; She is deserving, yet requires little praise; She is gorgeous, yet 40ish; She is a teacher, yet always willing to learn; She is a devout Christian, yet does not judge; She lives in the present, yet learns from the past. She does it all in the name of the Lord. She is my author and my dear friend, and is a very blessed lady. My friend is Betty Jean Taylor Godfrey.

You never allowed doubt to enter but faith always abound. When we could only see small victories, you showed us how far we have come. Glenda Raye Hill, 2006. She was inspired by Betty to write the words to the Song “Forever Friends” which follows:

I remember how your smile caught my eye that day. We became “Forever Friends” almost right away. We shared our thoughts and had long talks and passed the time away. Yes, we became “Forever Friends” for forever and a day. You’ll never know how much it’s meant for God to send a friend … That no matter what the circumstance would stay until the end! We’ve shared our lives, and we’ve both thrived knowing Jesus is the way. Yes, we became “Forever Friends” for forever and a day. “Forever Friends’…Through thick and thin …”Forever Friends”! The road of life may lead us down different avenues. But that won’t change a thing for us … our friendship is “true blue”. We’ve chased our dreams, had many schemes that time can’t fade away. Yes, we became “Forever Friends” for forever and a day. I know some day the day will come when God will call us home. We’ll have such fun as we just run along those streets of gold. We’ll laugh and sing on angel’s wings all along the way. Yes, we’ll become “Forever Friends” for forever and a day.

Clark & Georgina Godfrey, May 10, 2008. “Give God Our All in All” written for our

Earth Angel Mom Betty. Composed by Jana Fox and Glenda Hill. You are my inspiration, my confidant and friend. You taught me all life’s lessons from beginning to the end. And as I walked through valleys, you taught me to stand tall. To always take the high road and give God my all in all. You’ve been my shining light. You made me who I am. You taught me wrong from right, raised this boy into a man. And when I had a question, you said, by faith we walk. Just reach for my prize and give God my all in all. Chorus: And now I near the moment, my Lord has planned. I’ll pledge my life forever, take Georgina by her hand. We’ll walk through life together; catch each other when we fall. Giving God the glory, giving God our all in all.

Facebook, August, 2019. Mary Klenke said: “If you meet Betty, you are her friend.” Betty says to all Family members, Friends and Doctors (especially Dr. Anoop Nambiar, my Pulmonologist) who supported me and kept me going throughout the years, Thank you and I Love you!
