<p>Geraldine G. (Gibbs) Lucas</p> <p>June 28, 1949 &ndash; February 8, 2021</p> <p>Geraldine G. (Gibbs) Lucas, 71, of Engelhard, died peacefully Monday, February 8, 2021, at her daughter&rsquo;s home in Knightdale.</p> <p>She was born in Richmond, Virginia on June 28, 1949, to the late Bradford Fearing and Ellen Margaret Slattery Gibbs. Being in a military family, they moved frequently during her youth, settling in her High School years in Rockland, Massachusetts where she graduated in 1967.&nbsp; Her father often brought his family to his hometown of Engelhard, NC where Geraldine&rsquo;s love of the people and land grew.&nbsp; In 1977 she returned to Engelhard to make her home.</p> <p>Geraldine was a veteran of the United States Army, having served her country in Vietnam as a nurse. She was a graduate of Brockton Hospital School of Nursing.&nbsp; Received a B.S. at Bridgewater State University, and later graduated from East Carolina University&rsquo;s first Nurse Practitioner Program. She was instrumental in securing funding for the Hyde County Health Department building where she worked caring for her community.&nbsp; Later she worked for many years as a nurse at the former Pitt Memorial Hospital. Always a care giver, she worked for the Hospice Organization for Eastern Carolina, and helped open the Hospice office in Engelhard.&nbsp; Throughout her life she never failed in her calling as a healer, always offering her service to anyone in need.</p> <p>Geraldine enjoyed gathering with friends, and loved her family.&nbsp; She had a special interest in history and genealogy, and traced her family roots back over 700 years. Family reunions and sharing stories with family was a favorite past time.&nbsp; Other hobbies included cross stitch, crafting, games of all kinds, gardening and spoiling her dogs.&nbsp;</p> <p>Surviving is her daughter, Laurie Lucas of Knightdale, NC; two sisters, Ellen Lively of Abington, MA and Mary Lee Gagne and husband Ernest of Plymouth, MA; her sister-in-law Gail Gibbs of Halifax, MA; nieces and nephews, and her beloved dogs.</p> <p>She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bradford &ldquo;Tommy&rdquo; F. Gibbs.</p> <p>A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at the Robert Carson Gibbs Cemetery in Engelhard. Father Michael Scheutz will officiate.</p> <p>In honor of Geraldine&rsquo;s love for storytelling, the family has asked that everyone share their stories and memories of Geraldine with them.&nbsp; They can be shared on the Bryan Funeral Service website, or at the email memoriesofGeri@gmail.com.&nbsp; The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to The ASPCA at PO Box 96929, Washington, DC, 20090-6929, or to the Hyde County Historical &amp; Genealogical Society at PO Box 517, Engelhard, NC 27824.</p> <p>Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service Swan Quarter.</p>

I enjoyed serving with Geraldine on the Engelhard Medical Center Board. And history, she and I could always
find something to talk about. She rarely missed a meeting of the Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society.
She will be missed by her many friends here.
