Betty J. Norris Obituary

Betty Jane Norris, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2021 at the age of 96. Betty was born on September 25, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Walter and Elizabeth (Lagneau) Erickson. Her family soon moved to Minneapolis where she attended high school and became an accomplished clarinetist. She subsequently enjoyed working for an insurance company where, unusually for the times, she practically managed the office. Betty married and had two children, Kimberly and David, who were raised in Syracuse, New York. Betty later moved back to Minneapolis to care for her aging parents. While there, she reconnected with family and friends and also devoted time to volunteering at a children’s hospital for many years. Several years later, Betty followed her daughter, Kimberly, and son-in law, Michael, to Michigan to start the next chapter in her life and wait for grandchildren! Betty always put family first, only wanting to help and share time with everyone whether it be babysitting, school functions, sporting events, theater, music, traveling, or just quiet time together. Nothing gave her more joy than watching her grandchildren play hockey and other sports, exploring on family trips, or meals together with good conversation. She loved her family beyond measure and was always there to lift us up or hold our hand when we needed it. Betty also loved spending time with friends. Many of these activities involved one of many forms of needlework - quilting, knitting, needlepoint, and others. She was very talented and enjoyed the many projects and then giving her beautiful creations away to family and friends. She enjoyed bowling up to the age of 90 and then gave it up because she felt she couldn’t help her team be competitive as she tired in the third game! She always loved watching nearly all sports on TV and was a big fan of the Detroit Red Wings (hockey) and the Syracuse University Orange (college basketball). She loved attending weekly movies with friends followed by a light supper and she was often the driver for all until the age of 94. Betty found comfort in her faith and enjoyed attending Gun Lake Community Church. Betty is lovingly survived by her children: Kimberly Norris (Michael Nosanov) and David Norris; her grandchildren: Caitlin (Eric) Winsor and Matthew Nosanov: and her great-granddaughter, Ivory Morgan. She also leaves her “other grand-daughter” Brittany Morgan, most special friends, Claudia and Rick Dawe, and other dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and son-in-law, Janice and George Gardner, and her “adopted” son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Mary Morrill. Per Betty’s wishes, cremation has taken place and services will be private. If you would like to honor Betty’s memory, the family is suggesting a gift to the Youth Advisory Committee of the Barry Community Foundation or your favorite charity serving youth.
