Nathanal Jackson Obituary

Nathanal Jackson was born in 1927 in Memphis, Tennessee to William “Sonny” Jackson and Sara Kindle. He was the third of four children born into a hamlet of South Memphis known as “Po’ Hill.” He departed this life on February 1, 2021 due to complications from a stroke (non-COVID). He was 93 years of age. Nathanal overcame a lifetime of challenges to become a loved husband and father, a proud combat veteran of the U.S. Army, a prayer warrior, and a dear and respected church brother. The difficulty in his life began early when his mother passed away while he was only an infant. He was forced to leave school after fourth grade to work on the family farm, but he eventually earned his GED. When his father had a stroke, teenage Nathanal cared for him until his death. Then, no longer obliged as family caregiver, Nathanal joined the U.S. Army in 1951. Over his 20-year military career, the stocky, strong-as-an-ox enlisted man served in Germany, Fort Gordon, Georgia, Foot Hood, Texas, Fort Riley, Kansas and Fort Carson, Colorado, settling his family in Colorado Springs in the mid-1960s. He served in Korea after the cessation of hostilities and served two tours in Vietnam during that conflict. Nathanal was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal as a member of the Signal Corps. After retiring from the military as a staff sergeant, Brother Jackson excelled as a construction tradesman. Along the way, he worked in the Chicago steel mills, and was an apprentice plumber and electrician. He studied upholstery. He once worked as a bouncer! After his military service, he specialized in painting and drywall, finishing many buildings with pride of workmanship. His walls were “smooth as glass.” Typical for African Americans in a harsh work environment, “Jackson” trained many tradesmen who were promoted ahead of him. In the early 1970s, Nathanal Jackson and his family owned and operated a restaurant known as “Jack’s Dining Room,” located next door to Bell’s Nightingale nightclub. The restaurant was famous for its “Jack Burgers.” Through more than 30 years of active membership at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Nathanal served in the Men’s Choir, Hospital and Nursing Home Visitation ministry and Prison Ministry. The Federal Correctional Institution at Florence, Colo. named him “Volunteer of the Year” in 2002. He had a gentle demeanor (for an Army sergeant), but a powerful singing voice that touched many souls. When he was a boy, he prayed powerful, effective healing prayers for father, and his healing ministry continued into old age. When it came to knowing his way around town or learning new directions, Nathanal had a near-photographic memory. He rarely got lost, and he continued to drive safely into his 90s. Never confident in his formal education, he took literacy classes at the Colorado Springs Public Library. He read the Scriptures early in the morning and late at night nearly every day of the last 30 years of his life. Nathanal was preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years Delores Purnell Jackson, brother Henry and sisters Mrs. Majesta Stewart of Gary, Indiana and Mrs. Zerma Blank of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Nathanal is survived by his wife of four and a half years, Dorothy, whom we lovingly call “Dot,” Dot’s son Frank Pompey and daughter Deborah Wingfield, both of Daytona Beach, Fla., son Melvin Jackson of Laguna Beach, California, daughter Theonita Chavis (Steven) of Longmont, Colorado, grandchildren Safinia Chavis (Honolulu), Gabriel Chavis and Michael Chavis of Longmont, Chakel Palmer (Otto) of Loveland, Colorado, and great-grandson Jacob Palmer, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, many friends, and a deep, wide and loving church family.
