<p>O<span style="font-family:trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif;">n Tuesday, February 9th, 2021, Matthew Walker, Jr, a loving brother, cousin, and friend transitioned at age 81.&nbsp;Matthew, Jr (affectionately known as Sonny to most) was born on August 16th, 1939 in Union, SC to Matthew Walker, Sr and Ethel Allman.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif;">He was a longtime resident of the surrounding Asheville area and a retiree from the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center located in Black Mountain, NC after 20 plus years of service. </span></p> <p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif;">Sonny was a faithful member of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Swannanoa, NC, where he served as an usher, member of the choir, and a member of the Kitchen Committee.<br /> Sonny had a strong passion for fishing, detailing cars and spending time with his family and friends. His infectious personality, smile and laughter made certain that he never met a stranger, and his quick wit shot straight. He lived his life to the fullest with a kind heart and faithful spirit.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif;">Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Matthew Walker, Sr; godparents Johnnie Mae and Earl Walker; wife Dorothy Walker and his brothers J.C. Walker and Tony Walker, Sr (Jenelle).</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif;">He is survived by sisters Rosie Harrell (Robert Sr - Deceased) Asheville, NC and DeLois Washington Durham, NC (Reginald-Deceased); and brothers James Walker (Carolyn -Deceased) Asheville, NC, Johnny Ray Walker (Brenda) New Brunswick, NJ,&nbsp; Victor Walker (Angel) Greenville, SC, Preston Walker (Daphne) Columbia, SC; grandson Joseph Patton of Asheville, NC; and a host of loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.</span></p> <p><font face="trebuchet ms, helvetica, sans-serif">A Graveside Memorial Service for Mr. Matthew Walker Jr. will be held on Saturday, February 13th at 1:00 PM at New Salem Cemetery in Swannanoa, NC .</font></p>

On Tuesday, February 9th, 2021, Matthew Walker, Jr, a loving brother, cousin, and friend transitioned at age 81. Matthew, Jr (affectionately known as Sonny to most) was born on August 16th, 1939 in Union, SC to Matthew Walker, Sr and Ethel Allman.

He was a longtime resident of the surrounding Asheville area and a retiree from the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center located in Black Mountain, NC after 20 plus years of service.

Sonny was a faithful member of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Swannanoa, NC, where he served as an usher, member of the choir, and a member of the Kitchen Committee.
