Thomas Hamilton Barnes Obituary

Thomas Hamilton Barnes, age 86, passed away on Friday, February 5, 2021 in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.  Born in Boston on January 6, 1935, he was the son of the late Stephen and Ethel (Stevenson) Barnes.  He was raised in Mattapan and graduated from the Boston Public School System in 1952.  Following his graduation, Thomas began his career with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 4 in Boston.

Thomas married his beloved wife, Geraldine C. Sexton, on April 30, 1954.  The young couple made their first home together in Braintree, Massachusetts and later spent six years in Westwood, Massachusetts.  In 1964, Thomas and Geraldine settled in Walpole, Massachusetts, where they raised their four children.  Thomas continued working hard with the Local 4, serving as a crane operator for many years, affording him the opportunity to purchase a summer home on Cape Cod in Harwich.  In his retirement, he and Geraldine sold their home in Walpole and became full time residents of Harwich beginning in 1995.

While living in Harwich, Thomas regularly took to the ocean, sailing one of his boats out of the harbor in Chatham.  After Geraldine passed in 1997, Thomas relocated to Mashpee and as a snowbird, he looked forward to escaping the cold Cape Cod winters, traveling to Bonita Spring, Florida.  While in Florida, Thomas kept his social calendar busy, meeting his close friends for a game of cards, venturing over to the Red Sox training camp, or grabbing his glove and bat for a softball game.  More recently, Thomas returned to the town of Walpole, where he settled into his new community at New Pond Village.

Throughout his life, Thomas maintained a busy schedule with his job and social calendar, but he was never too busy to spend time with those he loved so dearly.  He was a shining example of a devoted husband, sharing a very special bond with his wife, Geraldine.  His Cape home was always open to his children and their families, whom he loved visiting with.  He had a special love for all of his grandchildren and was most happy when he was surrounded by all of them.

Beloved husband of the late Geraldine C. (Sexton) Barnes.
Loving father of Jeanne M. Treseler and her late husband, William, of Powhatan, VA, John S. Barnes and his wife, Lee, of Chesterfield, VA, Susan R. Fisher and her significant other, Michael Omiccioli, of Natick, and the late Thomas F. Barnes.
Cherished grandfather of William H. Treseler, III, Thomas Barnes Treseler, Brian Gerard Treseler, John S. Barnes Jr. and his wife, Susan, Thomas H. Barnes, Christopher Gray Barnes and his wife, Kimberly,, Alyssa Rae Gibbons, and Kelli Marie Frederickson and her husband, Kevin, and great grandfather of CJ, Logan, Liam, Wyatt, Josephine, and Finley.
Brother of the late Stephen Barnes, Ethel Hootan, Dorothy Bourasso, Frank Barnes, Arthur Barnes, Robert Barnes, and Marion Rafetto.
Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

As a result of the ongoing and ever developing health crisis in the world and with genuine concern for the people whom they love, Thomas' family has decided that his funeral services will be private, with interment taking place in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 300 5th Ave, Waltham, MA 02451
