Addie Lee Jackson Obituary

Obituary of Addie Lee (Clements) Jackson

Addie Lee (Clements) Jackson was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend.  She left this world to be with her Lord on February 1, 2021. She was 94.

She was born to Grover Cleveland Clements and Addie Lee Jordan Clements  on March 23, 1926.  She was predeceased in this life by her parents; her beloved husband of over 40 years, Orman Ezra Jackson Senior, Mother, Addie Lee Jordan Clements; her firstborn child, Orman Ezra Jackson Junior; her brother, Jack Clements; and her sister, Martha, Sue (Clements) Adams.  She is survived by four sons: Ronald E.  (Peggy) Jackson; Grover D. (Laura Jo) Jackson; David F.  Jackson and Donald R.  Jackson; five grandchildren: Bryan G. (Charlotte) Jackson; Jeffrey D. (Melissa) Jackson; Amy Shastid; Alan Jackson and Anna (Jim) Maddux; and nine great-grandchildren: Christopher (Morgan) Jackson; James (Emily) Jackson; Tyler Jackson; Laura Jackson; Colby Shastid; Jacob Shastid; Taylor Shastid; Addie Maddux and Andrew Maddux; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

She fondly recalled that her father (“Poppa”) let her ride her horse to church when she was six years old.  Her father died of pneumonia in the middle of the Great Depression in 1937, when she was only 11 years old.  Her family struggled financially after her father’s death, but she recalled many happy memories of her childhood years.

Although she spent most of her childhood in and around Evergreen, she graduated from Andalusia High School in 1943.  However, she always considered her classmates at Evergreen to be “her class.”  For many years she enjoyed attending monthly class reunions with her Evergreen classmates.

Addie had three boys, which she loved dearly but always wanted a girl.  On her fourth try, she had twin boys!  At that point she began to tell friends that her sons would just have to bring some girls home with them.  They did and she loved her daughters-in-law like they were her own children.

Addie worked as a seamstress but also sewed clothes for her family and even made a wedding dress for a friend’s daughter to be married in. In later years, she worked as secretary, and later as highly successful agent for Alabama Farm Bureau Insurance in Evergreen, where she won several prizes and awards on a state-wide basis prior to her retirement.

Addie had a green thumb and loved growing flowers, bird watching and learning about all sorts of birds and other animals.  She enjoyed watching the cows on the family farm and especially seeing the newborn calves grow up.

Addie was an excellent cook and could make even the simplest meals taste like a banquet.  On more than one occasion, on the way home from Sunday morning worship, her husband would say, “Honey, we’re going to have a few guests join us for dinner.”  (Dinner was the noon meal back in those days.)  No matter what she had prepared for lunch for her family, she could always stretch it to feed several other hungry diners.  No one left her dinner table hungry.  On one occasion, Rex Turner, who was then President of Alabama Christian College, and an associate of his joined us for Sunday dinner.  Prior to the meal, Pres. Turner told us that he was on a diet.  Never has a man on a diet been seen to eat as much or enjoy as much food as Pres. Turner put down that day!

She was a faithful Christian and treasured greatly her years of service as a teacher of the young ladies’ Bible class at the Evergreen Church of Christ.  She was known in the community for her pure life, and wisdom.  Many adults and teenage girls went to “Sister” Jackson for her sage advice or just for a listening ear.  She lived a life of optimism despite hardship.  She always had a smile and a kind word for all.  She never met a stranger, and many lives were enriched by her example and counsel.  She will be greatly missed by family and friends, but all will take comfort in knowing she is in a far better place.

A private family graveside service will be conducted on Friday, February 5th.
