Jason Marc Oliver

Jason Marc Oliver, 64, of Hopkinsville, KY died Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Alive Hospice at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Graveside services will be 12:00 p.m. Friday, July 7, 2017 at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West with the Rev. David Tucker officiating. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home in Hopkinsville is in charge of the arrangements. Marc Oliver is a native of Southern California, born on 21 October 1952. He is a retired Air Force Technical Sergeant, with over 21 years of service, of which his first 9 years were in the Marine Corps (he is also an honorably discharged Staff Sergeant of Marines). 19 of those 21 years were either in the Marine Corps' Band Field or the Air Force's Bands Branch. By trade, he is a bassoonist and a music arranger. Oliver learned how to arrange music at the Naval School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia in 1978. But it wasn't until he left the Corps in 1984 when arranging opportunities presented themselves. One such opportunity was when he was hired by Hollywood film composer, Joseph Julian Gonzalez to be his part-time copyist and orchestrator. That collaboration lasted 18 years (1991-2009) which resulted in music that was used in soundtracks to movies, such as “La Pastorela” in 1991, “The Cisco Kid” in 1994, and “Steal a Pencil For Me” in 2007. Another opportunity came when Oliver met Dr. Benjamin McKay Ayotte of ACME Publishing of Westland, Michigan in 2012. He gave Oliver an outlet for his wind band music. As of September, 2015, ACME Publishing has 76 pieces for wind band that are available for distribution and purchase. Oliver's military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with 2 bronze stars, the Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal with 3 bronze oak leaf clusters and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. As of July, 2015, Oliver (via ACME Publishing, Amazon.com, JW Pepper and other outlets) have sold and distributed almost 300 units to wind bands across the country and in certain places around the world. Oliver was invited to be a guest conductor with 2 community bands during the summer of 2015. He conducted 2 of his pieces with the Midland Community Band of Midland, Texas on 29 May; and he conducted another piece with the Beale Park Summer Band of Bakersfield, California on 28 June. He was a member of Second Baptist Church. Memorial contributions are suggested to Second Baptist Church 720 W. 7th Street, Hopkinsville, KY 42240.
