Tevis Malik "Gemellus" Jones Obituary

Tevis Malik “Gemellus” Jones was born January 23, 1995 in New Orleans, Louisiana He attended New Orleans Public Schools and post the federal flood precipitated by Hurricane Katrina, he attended school in West Felicia Parish and later in Houston, Texas. He graduated from the International High School in New Orleans Louisiana and studied Graphic Design at Loyola University. Tevis is well-known nationally as an accomplished Rap Artist and co-Founder of the clothing and merchandise brand Wake and Bake that he co-Founded with his twin Brother Craig, Jr. He was fondly known as “Gemellus.” Tevis’ multiple gifts emerged as an incredibly young child. He and his twin had a special language that only they shared, and they also manifested a gift for visual art as toddlers, when they used to spend countless time together drawing and coloring their work in a fashion way beyond their years. Tevis on went to shine as an artist in school as a gifted art student. He won numerous awards both locally and nationally. He has been featured in arts shows but one notable show for him was in honor of one of his mentors Baba Douglas Redd at the Ashe` Cultural Arts Center’s, Redd Linen Night. He was a gifted musician from his seedling days whereas he started as a percussionist playing African drums and percussion with many of the great masters of our city. He was a member of Culu Children’s African Dance Company, a third generation Young Guardian of the Flames, where he served Big Chief Brian Nelson as his Royal Drummer and has continued to serve through his son Young Warrior Marley who is now fourth generation Guardian. He was in the gifted music program where he played trumpet and later learned keyboards. He did countless professional gigs as a youth and received a basic knowledge of the business of the music industry which served him well in his accomplished career as a rap artist. Tevis was a brilliant man and was tested as academically gifted and stayed in the top 95% of his classes. He loved sports and played team football, basketball, and baseball and YES, he shined at them all. Tevis was a member of Christian Unity Baptist where he and his twin walked up the aisle hand in hand to accept Christ and be baptized. In his later years he joined the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where he was actively mentored by Pastor John C. Raphael until his death. He would frequently show up at Christian for special family events especially in support of his Son Marley. He had multiple jobs in his lifetime but his main job as a man was in caring for the loves of his life, his children, Marley Malik Jones and Mylani Jones. Despite his strenuous travel schedule and the pursuit of his career he spent quality time with his children and not only his children but the children of his siblings, cousins, and friends. He was always taking his children, because when he was with them All of the children were his, to parks, play destinations, children’s shows, museums, and attractions. If a new children’s attraction came to town, Tevis was taking the kids. If you wanted to know the REAL Gemellus, watch him get down and goofy with Marley and Mylani. He loved them with everything that he had and was.  In June of 2019 he was recognized as a Favorite Father in our community, a designation he well deserved.Family was his life blood and there was nothing he would not do for his family. Tevis was a deeply passionate man. He loved you with the depths of his soul and then………  Tevis would not go to bed as a child without coming to see he I needed a drink or something of which he always wanted just a sip. He would come into the house a night and if I had not gotten all the way into bed, he would literally put me under the covers and turn the TV and lights off.  Tevis was a very compassionate man, who would give you his beating heart if he could. I remember him giving homeless people his jacket, money, food, Tevis was a giver and not a taker. Now he had another side which was also as passionate but after he would think about things he would always come back and apologize and tell you how much he loved you. Tevis did not live a long life but he lived a full life and has left a deep and impactful LEGACY. He is proceeded in death by his Grandfather, Franklin Kent, and Great Grandparents Audrey Frellow and Clotilda Solete, Junius and Wilhelmina Peters.  His maternal Grandmother Elaine Hill passed shortly after his death.   He leaves to mourn his children Marley (Haseena) and Mylani (Makia); his parents Tamiko and Craig Jones, Sr; his siblings Emilio Lopez (Laureen), Letecia Hill (Dorian), Ashley Nzinga, and his twin Craig, Jr; his Grandparents, Dorothy Brown, Jamilah Y Peters-Muhammad, and Yusuf A.
