Marion Hughes, 92, of Carlsbad (Dog Canyon), NM passed away January 27, 2021 at his home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 AM, Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Guadalupe Christian Church with Wayne Brazil, Rusty Smith and Tommy Lawson officiating. Services will be streamed and may be viewed at dentonwood.com. Interment will follow at Hughes Cemetery, on the Hughes Ranch.

Marion Hughes was born January 5, 1929 in Dayton, NM to Sam and Clema (Owen) Hughes. In his early years he split his time between sheep camp and graduating from the one room school. He married Verna Clifton July 6, 1949 in Carlsbad, NM. Marion served his country in the US Army and then returned to Dog Canyon where he raised sheep and cattle for the next 65 years. 

Marion and his family were always involved in church, which met in the El Paso Gap schoolhouse. Years later, services were moved to Queen at Guadalupe Christian Church. He enjoyed working with leather and made many pairs of chaps, saddlebags, and even used his talents to fix a pair of blue jeans now and then.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brad Hughes, granddaughter, Tamara Ormand; brothers: Sammy and wife, Ima Dale and Woodie and wife, Charlsie.

Survivors are his wife, Verna Hughes of Dog Canyon, NM; children: Pam Butler and husband, Danny of Loraine, Texas; Salty Hughes and wife, Debbie of Dog Canyon, NM, Tracy Hughes of Carlsbad NM, and A.J. Hughes and wife, Amy of Millersburg, IN; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Beard of Lockwood, Missouri and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers: Grandsons Brian Butler, Clint Hughes, Trent Hughes, Trey Hughes and friends Joe Cox and Ray Ballard.  Honorary Pallbearers: grandson in-laws and nephews.
