Dr. Sigurd Bjarne Gundersen Jr. Obituary

Dr. Sigurd B. Gundersen Jr. died peacefully at home on January 27th, 2021 at the age of 96. His family was present and wish to thank the many individuals from Comfort Keepers and Hospice that helped him remain at home. “Dr Sig” as he was best known by patients and staff at Gundersen, was born in La Crosse, delivered by his father Dr. Sig Sr. He spent his childhood and teen years here developing lifelong friendships with many. Educational endeavors took him to Harvard for both undergraduate studies and Medical School. His surgical residency at Massachusetts General hospital was interrupted by service to his country as a naval flight surgeon in Korea and Japan. It was during his residency that he met and married our wonderful mother Avery Grant. With her support and assistance, the two of them raised 5 children and a legacy of service to the community. Following his naval service, they returned to La Crosse where he joined his father, brothers Adolf and Jerome as well as several uncles and cousins in surgical and medical practice at the Gundersen Clinic. Dr Sig’s career in surgery and leadership at Gundersen is best remembered for his dedication to patient care, surgical excellence, and education. When on vacation and in retirement he most enjoyed spending time with family either on the river or in the north woods of Wisconsin. An avid reader of history and active community member he enjoyed participating in Book Club and Rotary. Both he and Avery treasured family time as well as traveling with the Wisconsin Surgical Travel Club. He was indeed a true renaissance man involved in everything from restoring a Model A Ford to intricate needlepoint. Through his profound relationship with Father Patrick Augustine, he came to understand and know the Lord’s work he had been carrying out for his entire life. “Humble service to others”. He will be deeply missed by family and those who knew him. We will all remember: “The ones we love are with the Lord. The Lord has promised to be with us. If the ones we love are with Him and He is with us then, They cannot be very far away.” A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Gundersen Medical Foundation or to Christ Episcopal Church. Online condolences may be shared at www.dickinsonfuneralhomes.com. The Dickinson Family Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
