John Anthony DeStefano, Jr., 64 of Follansbee, WV died peacefully on Monday, January 25, 2021 at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA after a long and courageous battle with Covid-19 with his loving family by his side. Born on March 28, 1956 in Steubenville, OH, a son of the late John A. DeStefano, Sr. and Lucille “Lucy” Mary (Marino) Takach. John graduated from Brooke High School in 1974 and graduated from West Liberty University with a degree in Business Administration and Political Science. John was currently the City Manager of Follansbee from Feb 2004 to present and past City Councilman from July 1998-Feb 2004 and Banner Fibreboard in Wellsburg, WV in Sales from 1996 to 2004 and worked for Prudential Insurance as an agent from Sept 1981-March 1996. He loved the City of Follansbee that he worked for which led him to many organizations in city government among them as a member of the WV City Management Association and was elected President in August 2014, he formerly was secretary/treasurer, and a member of ICMA (International City Manager Association) from January 2010-present, a member of the WV Human Resource Management Association March 2005-present, a member of WV GOFA (Government Finance Officers of America) from May 2004-present, and was selected to represent WV in the Southeast Region on the nominating committee for the ICMA board. He was a life-long member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Follansbee, WV, a member of Theta Xi Fraternity, and a member of Williams Golf and Country Club. In his spare time along with golf he was a season ticket holder of the Cleveland Browns and attended many games with special friends and loved to cheer on the WVU Mountaineers. John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Cathy (Moffat) DeStefano; two caring daughters, Nicole (Craig) Shaw, and Julie (Corey) Piergallini; four grandchildren whom he adored, Carter and Olivia Shaw, Lucianna and Raylynn Piergallini, and two sisters, Catherine (Pete) Basil and Lori Ann DeStefano both of Steubenville, OH; several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 29th from 2-7 P.M. at the Mullenbach Funeral Home 669 Main St. Follansbee, WV. A vigil service will be held at 6:30 P.M. at the funeral home. A Catholic funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 30th at 10:00 A.M. at St. Anthony Catholic Church at 1017 Jefferson St. Follansbee, WV with the Rev. Father Jude Perara as celebrant. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Follansbee, WV. Due to the current pandemic, you are asked to wear a facial covering and social distance while visiting the funeral home and during the mass at church.
