Cleota Pauline McQuighan Obituary

Cleota Pauline McQuighan (Davis), 93, died peacefully in her home in Montgomery Village, Maryland on January 15, 2021. Born in Kermit, West Virginia, she grew up during the Great Depression in Appalachia, moving often. Her desire for a better life meant working days and attending school at night, resulting in her graduating from Grundy High School, Virginia. She moved to Cincinnati, OH, where she eventually found work as a clerk at the department store Mabley & Carew. At the start of WWII, she successfully passed the U.S. government typist test and then moved to Washington D.C. to join the Department of the Navy. While there, she proudly worked on the U.S. aircraft carrier WASP project. After the war, she met her beloved husband, an army war veteran from Staten Island, Joseph Edward McQuighan, at the Glen Echo Park swimming pool. They were married in January 1953 at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Washington D.C. In 1958, they relocated to Odenton, MD when her husband's government agency moved to Ft Meade, MD. She resided in Odenton, for the next sixty years, where she was a homemaker, and later worked for the Anne Arundel County School system. During the Vietnam War, she lived in Okinawa which later inspired additional world travels. She loved to read, garden, quilt, play bridge and cook. During the 2020 pandemic she continued to read the newspaper everyday and finished over 40 history books. She loved her Savior and treasured her family. She was the loving mother of Joseph M. McQuighan (Carolyn Harrigan), James McQuighan (Priscilla Chmura) and Thomas McQuighan (Denise Charrier, deceased, 2014) and Anita McQuighan. She dearly loved her 8 grandchildren, Ryan McQuighan, Lisa Jordan, Kelly McQuighan, Brendon McQuighan, Megan McQuighan, Patrick McQuighan, Kyle McQuighan and Phillip McQuighan. She also was the proud great-grandmother of 6: Declan, Conall, Barrett, Charlotte, Grayson and Allison. She made good friends wherever she was and leaves many friends in Odenton. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Edward McQuighan and son, David McQuighan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Odenton, or Jose Andres' World Central Kitchen. A private memorial Mass at St Joseph's will be held. Her remains will be interred with her husband at the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.
