David "Dave" Lee Walters

David Lee Walters, 56, a local resident for over 35 years and formerly of Athens, Pennsylvania, passed away after a lengthy illness on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was born in Portsmouth, VA on August 26, 1964. He was the son of Armsby L. Walters and Linda J. (Graham) Chilson. He is survived by his mother, Linda, and stepfather, William L. Chilson, of Highland, NY and his father, Armsby Walters, and stepmother, Louise, of Wyalusing, PA. Dave was a graduate of Athens High School in Athens, PA and worked as a Construction Laborer for R.L. Baxter Corp. in Poughkeepsie until his retirement in July 2020. His hobbies included camping with his friends, playing cards and bingo. He especially enjoyed his trips to the casino to play bingo. An avid bowler, he bowled for a time in the Thursday Night Mixed League at Mardi-Bob / Spins Bowling Lanes in Poughkeepsie. Dave also loved watching sports and was a Philadelphia Phillies fan. In addition to his parents and stepparents, he is survived by his longtime companion, Evelyn M. Shaffer, with whom he resided; siblings, Laura Cuddy and husband, Terry, of Highland, Sherri Chilson of Highland, Misty Walters of Dushore, PA, Matthew Coston and wife, Amy, of Elmira, NY, Tina (Chilson) Bizup of Laporte, PA, and William L. Chilson Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Dushore, PA; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is also survived by his grandchild of the heart, Alyssa McWhirt; and his much loved “little buddy”, his pet chihuahua, Spike. A period of visitation will be from 11 AM to 1 PM, Friday, January 29th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. A prayer service will follow at 1 PM at the funeral home and burial will be in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery following the prayer service. Masks will be required, and proper COVID safety precautions will be observed. Be prepared for longer than normal wait times at the funeral home.
