Funeral services for Mrs. Evon F. McLendon, 81, formerly of Mount Vernon, Georgia, will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021, at 3 PM, at the graveside in the McLendon Cemetery at 980 Stoneybrooke Road in Tarrytown, Georgia. Public viewing will be on Friday, January 29, 12-6 PM at the Dudley Funeral Home in Dublin. Mrs. McLendon was born on April 27, 1939, to Willie and Leomia Frink in Statesboro, Georgia. She is a member of the class of 1957 at William James High School in Statesboro, a 1961 graduate of Fort Valley State University, and did further studies at South Carolina State University. Mrs. McLendon worked as a Home Economics Teacher for Montgomery County Schools for 30 years. She was a past member of First African Baptist Church in Mount Vernon and a current member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Ailey. In her later years, she lived in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
She was a driven educator who put her all into improving the lives of not only her students but even the adults who desired to learn new skills or crafts. She always strived to bring education to the forefront of each person’s life as the basis of improving and uplifting the community in which she lived. She wanted everyone to strive to be a better version of themselves. She led by example, working diligently in her church, school, and in her civic organizations to achieve a higher standard of community. She was respected for this and she touched the lives of many.
She was a member of the Fort Valley State Alumni Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Eta Chapter, and the National Education Association (NEA).
As Evon had a profound interest in community service, she was the founder of Project Vision HOPE in Montgomery County, helping others prosper. This organization aided the elderly and provided food for the needy. As a teacher, she understood youth concerns and situations. Her organization helped students in the community to build self-esteem and to deal with peer pressure by sponsoring Youth Fun Day, among other incentives.
She was a member of the Verails Women's Club of Mount Vernon/Ailey, the American Cancer Society of Montgomery County, and she was instrumental in the implementation of the Montgomery Head Start Program. Mrs. McLendon passed away on January 21, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie D. Frink and Leomia P. Frink, her husband, Earl W. McLendon, her husband, James Hicks, her siblings, Willie J. Frink, Floyd Frink, Jack Frink, and Kermit Frink.
Mrs. McLendon is survived by her two sons, Dr. Earl F. McLendon, Jr., and Willie Alfred McLendon, both of Lawrenceville, Georgia, one sister, Sarah F. Curtis, one brother, Frank Hagan, four grandchildren, Kayla McLendon, Earl Isaiah McLendon, Ahshi McLendon and William Alfred McLendon, several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
