Irene Favel Obituary

IRENE FAVEL  Pisima Piwiskew (Rainbow Woman)

Irene passed away peacefully at home surrounded, by her loving family on Jan 21, 2021, in Calgary Ab.  She was a loving Mother, Kokum, Chapan, Auntie, and Chappie.

Irene was predeceased by her Grandparents George & Annie Taypayosatum, Charlie & Mary Rose Favel; Her parents, Charlie & Annie Favel; her children, Janice Favel, Herbert Favel, and George Favel; grandchildren, Charles Favel, Tyrone Bear; siblings, John Nanapay, Albert Favel, Charles Favel, Annie Favel, Rose Kay & Mary Kehler and brothers in law Sterling Brass and Mike Leplante; daughter-in-law Viola Haywahe and son-in-law Derald Black Kettle.

Irene leaves behind her children Annie, Gordon, Rick (Tina), Loretta, Doris, Kathy, Gerald (Charmaine), Jenneen (Tommy); her siblings Thomas Favel (Verna), Edna Brass & adopted brother Michael Laliberte as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many extended family and friends.

Kokum was a well-respected elder of the Kawacatoose First Nation.  She lived her life to the fullest, traveling throughout North America.  She loved attending ceremonies, pow wows, and round dances and was a hard-core Bingo Enthusiast.  She was full of kindness, acceptance, and generosity and followed her traditional teachings right to the end of her life.  She was always the first to give, her home was always open, and she had many adopted sons and daughters. Even at the end of her life, she thought more about the impact her passing would have on her family and would speak frequently about her upcoming trip home to Kawacatoose, in an attempt to prepare and comfort us for her final journey.  She loved having big family gatherings, listening to her little Chappies laugh and play.  One of the biggest joys in the last years were her many trips to the Rocky Mountains, with her last outing being to Bow Falls in Banff.  She was loved by many.
